Hello! I was wondering what peoples opinions are on fabric carriers. Has anybody ever used one? If so what are your experiences regarding them!

I travel a lot by train and need a carrier that will fit easily onto the seat on the train (as well as my own luggage), cat carriers seem pretty big and bulky hence the reason I was looking into a fabric carrier. My bunny is not a chewer for some reason (despite his huge collection of toys).

I understand that not everybody agree’s with them but it will be interesting to hear everyone’s points of view on this matter!

I don’t know if I will opt for the fabric carrier, it’s just something to consider.

I prefer just the plastic carriers.. If a bunny decided to chew through that, he could easily get out, and it would not be healthy at all.

I agree with you there. Safety is a huge factor in a carrier, I wouldn’t want my bunny escaping on the train!

My problem with the fabric carriers is that any impact with something is probably going to cause more injury than with a plastic carrier.

I once had a rabbit in hard carrier strapped into the front seat of my car (and I realize you are discussing train travel) and someone t-boned me and luckily Mango was fine – a bit pissed but fine. I’m not sure that would have been the case with a fabric carrier.

I’m glad Mango was ok, and had the protection of the hard carrier.
I will definitely see if I can find any small plastic carriers, I don’t want to put my rabbit at risk by using the easy option of a fabric carrier, especially after hearing what happened to you and your rabbit

I have a fabric carrier but it’s not the best option. It’s ok for Bam because he can’t be bothered with chewing, too much work. Yohio has chewed through it though, so I’ve mended it. I never go by public transportation with the bunnies but I guess a plastic carrier would feel more secure on a train if you were a bunny, the fabric one I’ve got is wobbly, like. I opted for the fabric type because I thought it’d be more practical because it’s collapsible, but after having read here about emergencies in the home (fires), I never collapse it anyway, it must always be ready to go.

So the next carrier I’m buying will be a hard-top one.

Thank you Bam, that was very helpful.
I guess the fabric option was really appealing to me as it is collapsible, easy to store, and smaller than your average cat carrier. But after reading everybody’s opinions I am now looking into a hard plastic carrier with an open top. I would never want to put my rabbit at risk for the sake of an easy to store carrier.
I can always pad out the bottom of the plastic carrier with plenty of fleece blankets and towels for extra comfort.

I have a fabric carrier, but we only use it for taking Bramble to the vet and back which is only about 10 minutes on the train or 15 or so in the car. It has been fine for him so far but he has started chewing a tiny bit of it so I don’t know if I would be comfortable using it for longer journeys, if you are travelling a lot with your bun I would maybe go for a plastic one just to be on the safe side.
