We have a big wire dog crate for our bunny’s cage. I started out using paper shavings (the colorful, fluffy kind) but they got EVERYWHERE. We had a big box of u-haul wrapping paper (for wrapping fragile things when moving) which is basically just newsprint with no ink, so I put a few layers of that down. But now she’s digging and chewing it like crazy. I just wonder if this is safe for her, if she’s eating all the paper she’s chewing. She seems to enjoy tearing and digging at it, though, so I don’t want to take it away if it’s safe. Is there an alternative that’s safer? This is my first house bunny, and we found her as a stray, so I’m sort of trying to learn as I go.

If the dog crate is one that has a black plastic tray as the floor of the crate then you don’t need anything covering it, just provide a litterbox and maybe fleece or hay mats for a cozy spot. If the crate only has a wire mesh bottom then you need more than newsprint to cushion your bunnies feet from the wires.

Oh ok, cool. It is just a solid black plastic base, no wire over it. I guess I’ll take the paper out and get a hay may. She already has a litter box that she uses very well. Thanks!
