Something very strange is going on with Neville.  He is licking his coat all the time! Is he too hott? I’ve been growing his wool out since it is winter and very cold here.  He is licking all over his body so that his wool keeps pilling together, forming little cowlicks.  Instead of brushing once a day, it’s necessary at least twice just to keep him looking good.  Is my little guy in pain? I’d appreciate any help!

There’s nothing wrong with him, he’s just grooming himself, keeping himself clean All rabbits do it, that’s why you don’t need to bathe him. Make sure to brush him at leats once a day though, because ingesting to much fur can cause a blockage which can actually kill a rabbit. That’s why grass hay is vital for rabbits.

Oh, okay, good! I knew that they kept themselves clean, but I guess since I’ve kept him so short up until now I never really saw the effects. Thank you!

The more you groom him, the more he will feel a need to groom himself. After you groom him, he feels a need to clean off the human smell from himself and fix his fur the way he wants it.

Just groom him enough to get off most of the shed hair, and prevent matting. Let him have his cowlick if he likes them.

Yup. As a twice over angora owner, I would recommend not over grooming, I LOVE brushing out angoras. Angoras are my favorite, but I’m terrified to own another, as they capture your heart and don’t let go. At the time I didn’t know about the importance of hay (this was about 30 years ago) and I worked for a vet. My angoras both died of hair balls at alarmingly young ages. Then an owner came in to the office with a 5year old angora that was FULL of mats. I asked my boss whys the heck someone who didn’t take care of their rabbit had theirs for so long and mine, kept immaculate, died. She just off the cuff said I probably took too good care of mine. All these years later I found out, as usual, she was right. The more you groom the more THEY groom.

Wow! Okay, thank you! I really have been over grooming him, then. I didn’t even know that was a possibility! So should I do maybe once every two days?

Does your bunny’s fur have guard hairs in it?

I’m leaving that question to LBJ since I haven’t been successful with angoras. Oh, but I adore them and looove your avatar. I want to squish him to pieces, and I feel your frustration at not being able to constantly groom him. Although I will reiterate that I didn’t give hay, either, 30 years ago. So you young people are already miles ahead of me there.
