I have have had my bunny for less then a month and her feet have gotten so dirty. I am not sure what it is because she has one cage I clean every third day and a pen in the living room that I clean the floor over every night and a littler box I clean every third day. I have tried to wipe them down but she HATES when I touch her feet and I don’t even want to hold her too tight and I am afraid to put her on her back. They are very dirty and I feel awful that I can’t figure out how to help. Is it possible its newspaper ink? Her cage has newspaper, baking powder, pee pee pad, more news paper and then bedding.

Any info (cleaning materials, making her sit still, why its dirty etc.) would be much appreciated

Just grab your bun and place her in the bathtub without it plugged in, fill the sink with warm water, use rabbit shampoo on bun, use small cup or bowl to scoop that water and pour over bun without wetting the ears. Ears when wet are prone to infection. Towel dry bun and keep bun indoors near radiator, or use a low noise and heat hair dryer. Bun should remain still in the bathtub because of unfamiliar environment and slippery surface. I wouldn’t bother with newspaper. It’s too much hassle cleaning. Just use wood pellets and put hay on top.

I’m guessing it is the ink, and she’d get them clean herself in no time if you removed it. Is her entire cage lined like this? If so, consider removing all bedding material from the rest of her cage. Rabbits love lounging around on bare flooring, and of course, sometimes in their litter boxes too.

I have heard some people mention corn starch rubbed in then brushed out if you just need something for the stains. But yes, time can be a wonderful fix if you get rid of the cause.

Regarding your question. The feet are usually the no no areas for where buns want to be touched. I can say in my experience it is true. You have several options. One. If you use newspaper this is just something you’ll have to accept, the inky paws.

If you get rid of newspaper shell eventually have them cleaned. My bun stepped in her pee and had the yellow paws and in a few days they were clean.

If you insist on cleaning them, try doing it when you are feeding them. I usually can do difficult stuff easier when they are eating their pellets.

I too think it’s the newsprint. Newspaper isn’t very good in litterboxes, there are better options.

Generally you’d want to do as little cleaning of a bunny as possible. They are very cleanly and clean themselves thoroughly almost like cats. Sometimes you may need to give a butt-bath, though.

Why is there so much stuff at the bottom of her cage? Have you been working on litter training?
