As I think I mentioned in another thread about x pens, I also have an enclosure that we have attached to said x-pen. I am curious as to how high I should be able to safely make it. Our bun( lop lionhead mix) loves to be off the ground, and when she is out spends most of her time on the back of our couch. I imagine surveying her domain. So I would like to add more levels to the NIC cube part of the area but am really lost as to how high is safe.

Also no real idea what is better ramps or stairs to travel level to level as well. The x-pens we portion of the project we plan will give about 20ft of space for her and we can get her bonded a bunny bud which we hope is enough.

        Any advice I’d always appreciated.

I personally have a level 14 inches high, but I don’t think I would go higher than that. I think a good rule would be that they should be able to easily jump from the floor to the level and back, otherwise it is too high.
I prefer stairs over ramps because mine tend to slip, but I think that’s up to personal preference.

Thinking maybe 4 levels, or is that a bit excessive?

As many levels as you want is fine Make sure he can’t hop out though.

As long as the levels are enclosed so she can’t fall they can be as high as you like. The real limiting factor I have found to be for height is human comfort cleaning the top level. You don’t want to make it so tall you have trouble reaching any parts while holding a dustbuster. For me, that’s 3 levels.

I find ramps work well for Porky, b/c he can zoom up and around and up and around, then zoom back down circle his porch and zoom back up again. It gives him a nice long run.

My NIC condo is 3 grids high (3×14 inches), though I have to say since I’m only 5 ft’ tall, I don’t really open the top door much.

At first, I had a level at ~10-11 inches, but my bunny was not jumping them. Shelter said he was not much of a jumper, and he may have been confined to a smaller cage for too long so was not used to it. Nonetheless, I lowered my levels and now they are around 9 inches each. My bunny has no trouble jumping them.

In retrospect, it’s worth re-adjusting the levels only after seeing how your bunny reacts to them. I was probably a little hasty in re-adjusting before he got used to them. Definitely don’t put TOO many cable ties on (just enough to secure them) before you settle on the height!
