Mocha specifically requested this, but I figured it might be helpful for others – especially new bunny owners – to see and discuss this.

        The Litterbox Routine

So, here’s the breakdown of my litterbox cleaning routine. This is what the litterbox looks like when I start – I take any clean, dry, unsoiled hay that may still be hovering at the top of the box and set it aside:

Then, I take the dirty litterbox and dump it upside down into a trash bag. Here’s what the soiled box looks like. I typically change the box once every 2-3 days.

Once the box has been tapped out into the garbage bag, it typically looks like this:

At which point, I hose the box down with vinegar and water, and wipe it clean and dry.

Then, I add the new, clean litter substrate. Currently, I’m trying out Kaytee Clean & Cozy, which is pretty much the same as CareFresh only more finely shredded. So far, I’ve really liked it!

Then, I place a handful of hay inside the box.

Finally, I place the box back inside the x-pen enclosure, right underneath the hay basket, so that the final result looks like this:

The hay basket usually gets refreshed/refilled a couple times a day.

So there you have it – my litterbox routine! Feel free to share yours, of course!

This is great-I do pretty much the same thing.
I resized one of the photos because it was huge and made the page all wack.

Oh thanks! I must have forgotten to resize that one.

okay mine looks the same without the hanging hay rack. How thick do you have the shredded paper? This is where my issue comes in. If I use too little it doesn’t soak up more than 2 uses of the potty. If i use more, then the hay gets mixed up with the bedding and its a mess

I’m actually currently using Kaytee Clean & Cozy at the moment, which is a finely shredded paper but clumps sort of thicker, so the hay kind of stays on top. The hay still does mix in a bit, which I think is inevitable without a screen, but I like it!

okay, so right now, i have half the side that she pees on with the Kaytee clean and cozy and the other half is hay so when she jumps in and orients her self, she’s munching on the hay and her butt is in the corner doing its business.

if you cover it all in hay, does that mean the urine flows over the hay and below to the paper material? I know, sadly, based on experience hay doesn’t absorb urine so it just goes through. Does that ruin the hay? Do the bunnies still eat the urine splashed hay? Sorry for all the questions, curious about this stuff and trying to be lest wasteful

No problem! I believe it depends on the rabbit whether or not they will eat it, and it’s fine for them to eat as long as they’re not just straight-up drinking their urine. Theodore will still eat hay that had come into light contact with his own urine. But some bunnies may not like this, which is why it’s important to provide a supply of fresh, clean hay also. For the most part, urine slides off the hay and into the paper.

It sounds like you have your box pretty much set up as I have mine, so that the bun can orient themselves to eat and bathroom in two different spots.

One thing I do to try and lessen hay wasting is to save any dry, clean hay from the litterbox before cleaning it out.

just now I have a separate pee box and poop box, this was Brambles choice not ours lol he had a hay box that was intended to be for lying down in/digging/eating the hay or whatever else he fancied doing with it but he now poops in it and I have just let it carry on since its not making a mess or anything. I have a cat litter box which he happily pees in but never really poops in there anymore. I usually change them both every other day or so depending on how much is in them.
