My bunny that I have had for only a little over 2 weeks loves getting out of his cage and hopping around my room. I usually let him out for about 4 hours and put him back in his cage right before I go to bed. He always gets really upset and chews on the cage and thumps his little feed on the floor..The other day I got home early and he was out a little over 6 hours so he was really happy when he was out and I gave him a treat when I put him back in his cage for being so good while he was out and not pooping in my floor. So I put him in his cage and hand fed him the treat for bonding purposes..but he still chewed on the cage afterwards and thumped. He actually seemed even more upset than normal even though he got more out of cage time! Anyone know how I can make his cage more enjoyable? He has all types of toys in there and things on the cage that make noise that he loves but he still gets so angry that I put him back in his cage before bed..

          Hahah. Typical bunny tantrum.

          How big is his enclosure?

You may have been ready for bed but he wasn’t done playing! The only suggestions I have are to attach an xpen to his cage, rotate out “special” willow chews that he only gets at bed time, or refill his hay with fresh just before he goes back into his cage to maybe distract him (going back on to the smell of fresh hay helps with Kieko).

I actually have learned only to give him hay and pellets and water at night because then he’s like ‘the giant is messing with my home so I must go see what it’s doing..oh new food and hay and water! I’ll go in’ and I have to shut him in or he’ll just hide under my bed all night lol

When I first got Henry and locked him up overnight I was careful to feed him then, to give him something to do till I Iet him out in the morning. He was never happy. So I ended up letting him free roam 24/7. I hate that he chews my bedding, including the clothes I am sleeping in while I am asleep, but I can’t lock him up. He gets very distressed, especially knowing the dog’s sleep with us too. It’s taken us a year, but Henry has settled. He doesn’t even wake me anymore, he seems to be content to do his own thing till we wake up – like he knows???
If this is something your prepared to consider, just be aware it may take a while (long time) for him to learn acceptable room sharing behaviour. But if your intention is to lock him up overnight – stick with it! And yep, give him his veggies and pellets at bed time, lots of toys with hidden treats and an extra space (xpen) to give him a sense of freedom.
Henry ‘sleeps’ under my bed (woo-hoo! bunk beds!) or behind the curtain next to the glass door.
He also ALWAYS has hay and water available – I never restrict these. But I did give him his veggies and pellets at night when he had a bed time. Now that he is free roam, he gets pellets for breakfast, and veggies for dinner with his hay and water available and accessible 24/7.
Henry never likes us touching his ‘stuff’, but I told him if he didn’t like it – he could move out! He still lives here…..

I am planning on letting him be free roam when I have my own house which hopefully isn’t too long away..but my grandmother doesn’t like the idea seeing that he chews on my walls and the trim around them no matter how many chew toys he has.. and I don’t restrict the hay and water I just give him fresh hay and water at night. He always has these though

When you finally let your bun be free roam 24/7, there is nothing better than opening your eyes first thing and seeing a bunny butt in your face! LOL!
Then you’ll get out of bed and see ‘everything’ he has chewed and scream ‘WHY’??? Ha ha ha ha…..

yeah, he is a really big chewer. I give him all these toys and things to chew on but all he wants to chew is the trim around my wall and sometimes even the floor..he sits there and scrapes his teeth against the floor..it’s a horrible sound and I usually spray him with a bit of water every time he does it..
