Our bun was neutered last Friday. Is it normal to have swelling days after a surgery? We went to his post-op appointment and the doctor said it looks like he has been chewing or licking his incision. I noticed he was messing with his incision the first night and maybe into the second day after surgery but haven’t noticed anything since. It looks like the bump is about the size of a pea (or a little bigger). His vet said to keep an eye on him and if it gets bigger to come in. Has anyone experienced this with their bun?? Did it go away? I really don’t want to have the vet put an e-collar on him unless it is completely necessary. Other than his incision he is eating, pooping, and acting like his normal self.

They can get swelling, sometimes severe, the size of a ping pong ball.In those cases of course you need to go back to the vet and get antibiotics etc.

Is the area red, warm (abnormally warm I mean), does the incisions look red/irritated/infected? Is there any pus or other leaky liquid? Smell? If there is, call the vet again and describe your findings so he/she can tell you to come in if they find it worrisome. That he seems otherwise fine if of course excellent!

My Bam got some swelling right after being neutered, but it was still minor.

Moshi didn’t have any issues, but you could see if the vet would let you take a picture and email it to them.

Thanks so much for the replies! There doesn’t seem to be any pus or smells. I was just at the doctor a few days ago and he said it seems to be healing fine. I’ll keep an eye on it though! I’m such a worrier lol.

We bunny parents seem to love to worry! I emailed pics of both of my lops’ incisions to the vet just to make sure they were OK. Don’t be afraid to call or email your vet if you do have any concerns — most vets even expect to hear from us!

Bramble was a little swollen for a few days after his op and he actually cut himself a little bit from biting at the wound but thankfully we didn’t need to go down the route of a collar for him the vet said its one of those things where some of them get a little sore and swollen and others don’t, I just had to keep him on his painkillers a few extra days and he was fine. he is nearly four weeks post op now and his wound is fully healed and he is nearly back to his old self.

Ah that makes me feel much better kirstyol! Thank you for the reply! It seems to be getting smaller and it definitely isn’t infected. So that’s good!

No problem, I was worried sick about Bramble after his op so I know how you feel.
