Hey everyone! My rabbit Pepper gave birth unexpectedly tonight – scared the hell out of me! She started nesting like crazy and I thought she was just having another phantom pregnancy. She then hid under my duvet for a while and when I pulled the covers back she was sat with 8 little wrigglers! I had no idea, she is about 5 and a half month’s old and is due to be neutered in a couple of weeks. I took her to the vet a while back and they said I should wait til the 6 month mark. Well she went to a well respected (as far as I know) rabbit boarders a month ago and this must have been where it happened. I explained to them she was not yet neutered as she was slightly too young but she was on heat and was told she would have her own hutch. Regrettably at the time I was stressed and in a rush and I didn’t enquire further about whether she would have any access to other rabbits but at the time I guess I assumed as they seemed quite rabbit savvy they wouldn’t let bunnies mate on their watch. Wondering if I have a right to at least ask for my money back. I will definitely be letting them know about the situation. Not happy about bringing more bunnies into the world when so many already need homes. They are sooo cute and adorable though! Made them a proper nest, they all look healthy at the moment. What a strange evening!

No probs Lexi – BUT DON’T LEAVE US COMPLETELY!!! That would be devastating……
Maybe, just remove the photo’s and because it was an accident litter, I’m sure it will still be ok to share your news with us. Just that most of us aren’t any good with babies and knowledge. But we’d love to be kept updated, I would! And your not asking for help, you seem to know what your doing and have a great vet, so I’m sure it’s ok to share your surprise with us, just take the piccy’s down – how lucky that I got to see them.

And WOW, what a surprise that would have been…. Lol!

Hi Lexy, What a shock for you and I think this is a good lesson for the unwary that might be planning to use boarding facilities in the future… Hopefully they may only trim the pictures as you have not breached the rules grossly… Please feel free to PM me if you have any questions as I have had to deal with a few oops and rescue litters. In the interim make sure they are warm and in the nest covered with Peppers fur… Pepper will look to be ignoring them but that is because they only feed them once or twice a day either late evening or early morning. Keeping them warm is paramount as if they get cold they cannot feed.

And yes, contact the boarding place and let them know and I would ask for compensation of some sort… Once the little buns start to eat they will need unlimited everything… as will Pepper.. She is going to need unlimited hay, pellets and greens so she can feed the troops. Check out the HRS site as they have some good info on oops litters.

Wow! Don’t think I’d be using that boarding facility again! You warned them that she hadn’t been spayed and they still didn’t prevent contact. Makes me wonder how many injuries have occurred there with bunnies not getting along.

Are you planning to keep the babies?

Pop a towel or blanket over part of her cage so she has some privacy too, that may be why she hid under your covers to have them if the nest was to open or exposed.

I shouldn’t compare….. LOL! But when my dog had puppies, I prepped everything (no internet, so just what I thought she needed – boiling water, clean towel’s??? Ha ha ha!) a huge box with blankets in a quiet space, and she kept jumping up on the lounge next to me. I gave in – I removed the sofa cushions and put a blanket down. Within an hour I was a grandma!

Wow 8! I can imagine it would have been a surprise. They appear pretty healthy. How is Pepper doing?

I’m glad your going to contact the boarding facility. I hope they realise what a burden this will be. Do you think you’ll be able to keep them all or have to find homes for them all?

This site doesn’t support intentional breeding but understands there will always be accidental litters. We can certainly help you navigate your way through this if you choose to stick around. I hope that you do.

The picture rule: well you probably understand this now having read the guidelines. I can understand it would be difficult not to share them though. The rule was implemented about 5 years ago after 3 different members had accidental litters around the same time. You can imagine, the boards were swamped with baby pictures. I’ll be honest, it was incredibly cute to see & follow their progress. But it also attracted a lot of attention and I think new visitors to the site. I think the concern was it what give a false impression of the boards being pro-breeding.

I wonder if members in situations like yours are able to share via the profile albums or a third party site? So anyone interested could go view pictures there?

8 babies-What a surprise! So glad they all seem healthy. I do hope that you can receive some help from the boarding place.
As much as I hate to be the one to ruin the fun, I will have to remove your piccies. Jersey gives a great description of why. I do hope you will stick around, your bunny (and the bubs!) are sweethearts.
I wish I didn’t have to be the bad guy, but I do.

Wonderful! Only the pic’s were removed. As I and everyone that has posted said Lexi, we would love to be included on how you, Pepper and the bub’s are going. I so hope you haven’t left us completely? We are good fun, and when it gets a bit overwhelming (and I’m sure it will?) we will be here for you and hopefully can offer you a smile, support and encouragement if and when it does. Shame about the rules, but I do get it. But remember, we LOVE bunnies! and their owner’s along with accidents that weren’t their fault.
I’d like the think anyone who is lucky enough to have one of Pepper’s bub’s may become a BBer toooo!

I think so. Go ahead and do that if you want to Lexy, that way we can see the photos. I don’t think this will be an issue.

Wow, definitely contact the boarding facility – also rabbits do not go into heat – they are induced ovulators which means that they can get pregnant at any time even right after the birth of their babies.

Any boarding facility that boards rabbits should know the dangers of allowing even altered rabbits to play with each other.

Aw thanks guys I’ll do that. I got over excited and posted the pics without thinking  I think I will keep 1 or 2. I’m going to try and rehome them in 2-3 months when they are fully weaned. Only in pairs+ or to be bonded with an existing rabbit. Mother and babies are all doing well, will keep you updated. I e-mailed the rabbit boarders today and am waiting for a response. Still can’t believe it!!

Roberta had to find homes for babies and she had some great info put together to give to the adopters. I’m sure she wouldnt mind you getting in touch if you’re interested.
