Recently, Midas started to jump on top of his Hidey house, which is about twelve inches high. He has no trouble getting on top of it, and I am fine with him jumping on it. The problem is, he doesn’t like to jump down.. I made him a four inch stand, and he still is a bit scared. Midas loves to be on top of it, so I don’t want to take that away from him, but I don’t want him to get stuck which I am at school and him not have water or hay. He hasn’t peed on top of the box, hopefully he won’t, but he has pooped once on it.

Do you think he is actually scared? Does he just like being up there? Do your rabbits like to sleep on top of their Hidey houses?

Bunnies like to be in high places I read once. My bun likes to hop on the hidey house and just chill on top. Before I was buying the Timothy bungalow for her and it was in the coroner of her cage. She would just hop on and hang out. So there is that

If it’s not very high I doubt Midas is scared but its a possibility. Have you tried training to jump down? Before I would bring my bun up to the couch to hang out with me. She was scared of jumping down. I kept training her and one day she did it. Now she hops up and down all day

Some bunnies like to use a sloping ramp to get up and down when they don’t want to jump. You can get one that comes as an accessory to a cage and attach it yourself, or check out the ones that go with the cottontail cottages. Basically, if it’s a plain ramp, they can walk up and down, and possibly have room to sit under it as well.

Sometimes it really is a question of them just getting used to the height and how to navigate it. Bunnies tend not to plan to far in advance. Goes quickly from “Yeahhhh! I’m on top of the world!” to “Oh. Wow, that’s a height.”

You could try building or buying a ramp for him if you want to help him out.

And how would I go about “training him to jump down”?

I agree that a ramp may help; chances are he will go down part way and then hop down.

My cat does the same thing, oddly enough: She loves to be high up but is terrified of coming down and would get “stuck” on the higher levels of her cat tree until we lift her down. This is due to her hips though, as she’s always had a bit of a bunny-rump and has arthritis. The solution we found for her was to give her other platforms nearby that she felt were wide enough and near enough to hop to. It took some coaxing, with sweet talk and strategically-placed treats, for her to realize this was the best way down… Judging by what I’ve seen of my own bunny, training a bun is a lot like training a cat–“What’s in it for me?”

Try luring him down with a healthy treat, and give it to him when he jumps down. This will not only show him how safe it is to jump down, but it will reward him for doing so.
