We changed our rabbit food from Timothy Hay to Orchards Grass Hay and now the litter boxes smell like onions. I have a girl bunny who is fixed and she is 8 months and a 3 month girl rabbit (we think she is a girl cause her parts look like the other girls) who is not altered. I have been reading different things about what it could be. Both babies poop just find, round dry poops they both eat like Hay is going out of style. They drink a ton of water. I don’t see anything that indicates that they are not well. The smell started after we changed the food so I was wondering if diet change of hay could have made them smell like that. Its not heavy or anything. I have only smelled it a couple times while cleaning their litter boxes but I don’t smell it all the time when cleaning their litter boxes. I was told the little 3 month old baby is not in her prime to be marking her territory. I have mad an appointment for her to be seen but I can’t get it until the week of October 6th. So just wondering if anybody could shed any light on this and take my stress level down. I can’t handle another death as I have had 3 people and 2 animals ( 1 a stray bird I rescued from mean school boys whose internal bleeding was so bad he died in my arms while I was stoking him and telling him its gonna be okay) (and My little Helios that died of fright from something that happened outside. I was in PHX when he died.) My babies are my world so some kind of detail or what not that would be helpful would be great!!! Thank you all so much for your time!!!

What else are you feeding them? I would seperate them for a little bit, to see who’s poop/urine smells so bad (I would probably think the younger one)

They get a little bit of pellets in the morning and at night, 1 basil leave every other day and 1 carrot every other day. I had no problems with the smell when I was giving them all these things with Timothy Hay.

I’m going to take a guess and say that your little girl is actually a little boy. At 3 months and with the onion smell, it’s very likely that your bun is becoming sexually mature. Some male rabbits are known for their onion-y smelling markings. Male and female genitalia in rabbits are also very similar!

This is a good article on sexing rabbits. WARNING: Does include large pictures of rabbit genitals. That’s probably obvious, but I thought I should add in a warning. http://www.rabbitnetwork.org/articles/sexing.shtml

I also suggest you look into some of links about what veggies to feed your rabbits. Carrots are very high in sugar and should only be fed in small amounts as an occasional treat. Basil is a good herb to feed, but one leaf every other day is not enough veggies. They should be be getting a minimum of 2 cups of veggies (predominately leafy greens) for every 6 ibs. You’d want to introduce the new veg slowly though.

I have a young male rabbit approaching sexual maturity and since the first time he started pooping, I thought it smelled like onions.

With the males, it’s the urine (when they mark) that smells like onions. But since they usually poop and pee in the same area it makes it all smell onion-y. I remember when Ox was unneutered he’d make the entire room smell like onion even though he was only marking his litter box! Bleh!

I have had 2 female (spayed) rabbits, who sometimes had poop that smelled like onions.

Buns of either sex can spray and mark, the oily stuff smells onion-y. I think it’s more often associated with boys, but girls can smell too.

I’ve never heard of girls smelling onion-y before. I learn new things every day on here!
