It’s been a little over a month since I got my bun Pillows from the humane society and I can still feel her hip bones when I pet her. Is that normal for 1 year old bun?

I’ve been feeding her Oxbow young rabbit pellets (I realize she’s technically an adult) and she whomps it and it almost seems like I starve her! I give her pellets twice a day, a little condiment cup full plus some each time. She also has access to hay and I give her lettuce and ti leaves occassionally.

i presume by condiment cup, you means the little 2oz ones they use for sauces at restaurants. try giving her one of those filled with oat groats (in addition to her pellets). has she been in for a follow up checkup?

I think it’s about 2oz. I’ll try oat groats. When I took her to the vet right after I got her he didn’t say anything about her weight, however, it didn’t seem like he was really checking for much (I’m going to see a different vet in the future, I just can’t justify taking her in again so soon when she is behaving fine and has an appetite).

I had a look at your tumblr. She looks like a dwarf breed. Some can look slender. She’s very pretty!
Oats do help them with weight. Just give a few days trial on a small portion to see how she does with them, then increase if no issues.

Your rabbit sure doesn’t eat much. Mine eats 2x 70ml cups of Science Selective pellets twice a day. That’s roughly 9.85oz of pellets per day in addition to unlimited hay and some fresh veg every other night. My rabbit refuses to eat Beaphar Nature pellets and refuses to eat Oxbow pellets. If the pellet isn’t fenugreek flavoured, my rabbit ignores it. You might want to cut out the lettuce and give something that’s more nutritious. There’s no vitamins or folic acid etc in lettuce.

I’ll give her more pellets and make sure to try the oats…when I can get ahold of them. Thanks for the help!

Lettuce is perfectly fine – you should continue to feed her lettuce and greens. Be very careful with oats – they are a carbohydrate and rabbits really are not meant to eat carbs.

                      Update:

I started to give Pillows some oat groat (not too much!) and she loves it. I’ve also been giving her more pellets and she’s been eating more hay when she’s out roaming my room. We’re heading in the right direction!

                      Thanks for al the input!
