About three weeks ago, I went to a breeder to pick out a rabbit, and my husband and I fell in love with a little month-old blue holland-rex-lionhead mix.  We named him Minion, and he spent all of three hours settling into his new home before he started binkying and doing his happy drama flops.  Minion is very healthy, curious, and affectionate.  As he has been held since birth, he relaxes very quickly in my arms and will often lick me while I hold and pet him.  I have held Minion for hours, both in my lap and on up on my shoulder, with hardly any squirming.  He’ll dig a bit to let me know when he needs to go back in his cage, and has never had an accident on/with me.  Minion is very sweet, and seems to have concluded that I am his personal petting machine.  Lord forbid I should do anything in his cage but love on him, and he will make it this clear by shoving his head into my hands and freezing in his pet-me-pancake pose.

My husband, however, is another story.  Minion seems just as relaxed with him, and will even hop out of my lap into my husbands lap when we are on the couch together.  He will lick husband’s hands and beg for pets, and enjoys every minute of attention.  But before 3 minutes is up, Minion will always leave a puddle on my husband.  He is clearly not spraying, and nothing about hubby seems to bother Minion.  We are both mystified. It’s not even a marking dribble, but Minion will completely empty his bladder on my dear husband! We have tried:

        1) both petting him at once in husbands lap (piddle puddle while licking my husband’s hand)

        2) hubby petting Minion while he is on my lap (no piddles)

        3) sitting Minion beside husband while petting him (piddled)

All to the conclusion that my husband is just the perfect place for Minion to pee!  Please help me, my husband is very fond of minion too, but he’s really my pet overall.  I want my husband to be happy with him. I fully intend to get my Minion neutered when he is old enough, but he’s only two months old and his bunnyballs havent even dropped yet.  I have no idea what to do!

First off, welcome to the forum!

It sounds to me like Minion just likes your husband so much and probably likes the smell of him that for some reason he’s decided that’s the place for him to pee. Since he hasn’t reached sexual maturity yet, it doesn’t sound like marking – possibly just a fairly arbitrary bunny behavior, but if anyone else has any further insight to the cause then they’ll be able to give you more info.

Over time, this will probably decrease, but it’s good that you’re planning on getting him neutered. Bunnies can usually be fixed once they reach 5-6 months of age. This will very likely correct the problem and prevent similar issues from happening in the future.

But until then, you can try a couple things:

          – Take a towel and gently stroke him with it so that his fur and scent gets on it a bit. Then rub it on your husband.

          – Anytime he pees on your husband or start to do so, say “NO!” (firmly but not too loud) and put him down.

          – Have your husband avoid holding him. It’s not an awesome solution, but it will definitely prevent the issue!

Thank you so much for your reply.  Your feedback is a great help. I am making a few changes to how we interact and handle him, and have gone so far as to take a used pair of Hubbands boxers and putting them in Minions cage.  He is doing well with them, and sleeps on them, after licking them for about 15 minutes.  Wierdo.

And thanks for the warm welcome!  I’m eager to enrich Minions life with us using this site.  Hubband is very fond of him too, and wants a good relationship with his bun-son.

Glad to hear it! It sounds like from his licking your husband’s boxers that he really likes either the way your husband smells, or he really likes your husband!

Let’s see if this helps his behavior.

I’ll have my husband try to hold him again tonight. . . Here’s hoping we’ll have a piddle-free day!

OH…MY…GOSH…!!! That is the funniest thing…next to AndHenry’s story of Henry’s pee attacks!!! I love this thread and will have to share it with my hubby. I wonder if it’s a male thing that will get better with neutering. That seems to be the cure-all, but I can’t help but wonder, though he sounds way too young to be hormonal.

Sorry. No advice or intelligent feedback. Just LOVE this one!! Stories like this make my hubbie appreciate Gus a lot more

Having confirmed with Minion’s breeders that he is in fact about two and a half months old, Hubband and I agree that rabbit puberty is not a possibility. The boxer experiment had no effect on his man-piddling. He has been becoming even more affectionate with me in particular, even stopping breakfast time to rush after me and ask to be picked up and petted. He’ll even flop on my feet until he gets the love he wants. He is beginning to figure out what the litter box is for, as long as I keep it fairly clean.

He is showing more interest and even excitement over treats (papaya and also yogurt,) but his main motivation is still being petted. Fortunately his behavior is becoming more malleable, he’s paying attention to “no” and calling his name more consistently. So we really doubt that Minion will have a long-term behavioral problem. But regardless, we’re getting him snipped as soon as he’s old enough. How can I tell that he is ready to be altered?
