So I have recently moved. I have brought all of Gunther’s old things so that he would feel slightly at home and he has been eating fine and reacting the same way to treats as he always has but he definitely seems more timid and afraid. He has been finding spots to hide in and he especially likes hiding behind the bed. I’m worried that he’s going to continue to be scared in this fashion. How do I help him get more settled in? Also, I would like to block off the entrances to the back of the bed so that he doesn’t have access to those small areas. Any ideas in that regard as well? I was thinking shoe boxes.

This is my typically outgoing bunny hiding. :'( Breaks my heart.

Is he free range in your new house? I would give him a cage just an x-pen with all of his things in it, food water litterbox blankets hidey houses, etc. Just to give him a place that is HIS only.

He has always been free-range. The room he is in is essentially his room, it has all of his toys, and food, and so forth. He seemed a bit less weary this morning but then began hiding again. It could be that he just thinks its a fun area to hide in rather than hiding out of fear but I don’t know. I know that last night he was just running back and forth around that hidey area, so that could have been him having fun. Regardless, I don’t really want to enclose him.

I haven’t had to move with my bunnies yet but I would imagine it would be almost the same as bringing them home the first time. It smells weird, sounds weird and looks strange/scary. I would think that taking the same approach as when getting a new bunny would be the way to go. Sit with him, talk to him, give him treats and let him get used to it on his terms and in his own time. The good news is YOU are going to be part of his safe zone since you are familiar.

I used NIC cube panels to block off behind the couch when I got Strawberry. He liked to go back there and hide and since they aren’t free roam all the time I needed to be able to get him back in his pen when the dogs were out. I used 3 zip tied together in a U shape so that the two sides could hold it up and in place.

That is a good point. I’m just feeling so anxious that he is going to become very stressed out and in turn that might affect his appetite. I may just let him get acclimated without my imposing for a bit and hopefully in a week or so he’ll be back to his old self.

In regard to the NIC cube panels, that is a wonderful suggestion! Definitely worth noting! Thanks!

It’s normal for bunnies to feel nervous in a new place. I would just give him some time but keep an eye on his appetite and poops.

We recently moved as well, and had similar issues with Pete. Before moving he had free run of one room in the house. Once we moved he gained free-roam of the whole apartment, but quickly took to hiding under the bed and behind the dresser.

I found that if I close off the room that he is hiding in and sit with him and just talk to him for a while he relaxes, and then feels free to binky and run around the whole apartment. I think that the new smells and landscape change are just sometimes too overwhelming for him. Even though he’s free range at home I find he enjoys having these little secluded bonding-sessions.

I hope that Gunther relaxes into his new home.

Thanks so much! He’s been a bit less nervous. No binkies just yet but certainly more outgoing.

My bunny was very similar when I moved! I ditto what the others said. It took Cinnamon about two months of getting used to her new home before she was back to her old self running around and binkying, but she’s very happy now I just sat on the floor for a while and waited for my bunny to come over to me – it was almost like we had to re-establish trust while she was getting used to the surroundings. I think just being patient and gentle and after a few weeks she will feel more comfortable
