I know here in NZ we are only allowed to import rabbits from Australia, and Australia is only allowed to import rabbits from us, but I’m interested to know what the laws are for other countries? We are quite keen to move to a different country at some point (and that may be sooner rather than later if this election goes where I think it may… Eeek) and are willing to pay however much it costs to take our bun with us

Oh WOW Aeyja! Where do you think you may want to go??? Or are you just looking for places that will accept bunnies from New Zealand???
Don’t hold me to this, but isn’t there a quarantine period? Like weeks/months? If so (?) I couldn’t.

I haven’t heard anything about your elections here – is it really that bad to want to move? Gosh, I despise our politicians here (don’t most of us?), but I doubt I would ever move over them. I hope the elections go your way – when are they? You live in a beautiful part of the world, it would be such a shame.

Election day is today and it’s not looking good  I probably wouldn’t actually move away because of it, but I really don’t think we are headed down a path that will benefit the country in the long run. I’m about to start a PhD, essentially commiting us to live here for another 4 years, so just exploring my options before setting everything in stone. But… Urgh. I don’t understand how so much of the country can vote the way they have, so many regretted it last elections and are now doing the same thing….. Urgh!

I’m not terribly fussy on where, just want to know where I can take Harvey at this stage

Good for you for being so sensible to make this decision before starting your PhD, and good for you for doing a PhD! Congratulations and WOW! Again, good for you!

Results are in and It’s National for another term… Sigh. Oh well.

Only thing I need to keep in mind is that if I move outside NZ/Australia and take him with me I will never be able to bring him back :/ so that in itself is commiting to living in another country for ~10 years… Big decisions!

What does the quarantine involve Tessie?

No quarantine requirements for the US. We have pretty good schools, but definitely far from your home.
I don’t know a thing about New Zealand, but could it get so bad there that you’d want to leave your home and family? I’m a worrier by nature, but I’d be so afraid to take my bunnies on a flight and then through all the inspections . . . for that matter, I’m afraid to take ME on a flight and through all of the inspections!

NZ is certified rabies free and is a part of some of the Euro exclusions to quarantines, check if rabbits are covered, dogs/cats do not need to be quarantined if they meet the travel standards. http://www.biosecurity.govt.nz/exports/animals/uk-pets-scheme.htm – Also, UK allows some animals to be quarantined at home, if they are ones that typically never leave the house. A friend was able to take his bird to the UK from the US and they let him do at-home quarantine so he didn’t have to leave his parrot in a facility since it would stress him out too badly.

From NZ to the U.S. you can bring animals with just a health certificate, since NZ is classified rabies free, EXCEPT to Hawaii. Hawaii has strict import laws due to the fragile ecosystem of the island. But, given how much it costs to live there, probably don’t wanna move there anyways! lol

http://www.biosecurity.govt.nz/going/personal/pets <– there is a site with some info about taking pets to various places. It focuses on cats/dogs though, so you'll need to call for info on rabbits.

You can get around the “rules” for Hawaii with rabbits by saying they are livestock. Dogs and cats are different, but you don’t necessarily need to quarantine if you get a health certificate and proof of rabies vaccination prior to arriving. Sadly, I looked all this stuff up before. LOL

JackRabbit, I’m only 22 and haven’t travelled yet, so no matter what happened with the politics I was always planning to move to another country, at least for a few years

Thanks for the info! I think if the quarantine wasn’t allowed to be at home I wouldn’t bother. I couldn’t deal with leaving him somewhere without cuddles.
