Please help me, Im desperate she is 7 years old, I live in a region where no exotic vets are available, she had never been sick. The vet gave her amoxicillin for 8 days then I found out it was dangerous for rabbits ( for an eye infection ) , its been 8 days orally,  I read a post here, where the person said he had to give her meds cause the amoxicillin killed her flora, but how do I know if I need to contrarrest it, if she has no symptoms yet ?

This is the link where they tell you what to do if they were given a dangerous antibiotic, but how do I know if I should do it is she does not have diarrea ? I payed 50 dlls on Vetlive online, telling them all the details, and they didnt help me, I dont know what to do, if she is fine, but 8 days have gone by since she stopped with the amoxicillin., what if it kicks in on the 10 day as some online articles say ?

        http://www.medirabbit.com/Unsafe_medication/Unsafe_treatment.htm

In case there are vets here, or someone with similar experiences, please help me

My main concern is what if  she actually managed to take the amoxicillin well, and I start medicating her for nothing ? Should I wait ? Should I give it to them just in case ?

        Please help me

Should you continue the amoxicillin – ABSOLUTELY NOT. It can be 10 days after the amoxicillin that it can kill a rabbit.

I don’t know that diarrhea is necessarily a symptom of this either. You need to contact that vet or find another one as this is fatal for rabbits. I’m not entirely sure what can be done at this point but do not give her any more amoxicillin.

Probiotics to restore gut flora should be fine, it’s not a medication just naturally occurring bugs in our stomachs. I would start with them immediately and keep looking for a vet.

Ditto what Sarita said with the Amoxicillin, and call the vet responsible and tell them so he doesn’t do it to someone else’s bunny.

I agree, don’t give any more amoxicillin. You can do the probiotics to get on top of things, even if you bunny isn’t having any symptoms as of yet. They certainly can’t hurt, anyway.

                Thanks to everyone who responded
No of course I wont give her any more amoxicillin, that was out of the question, what I meant is if I should medicate her , ( like the article says ) with the meds they recommend when a rabbit has taken amoxicillin. ( other meds )
Ill give her the probiotics, and Im actively searching for an exotic vet, but no lick so far.

I think that would be a good idea – can you print it out and take it to the vet?

Yes, Ill do that, Im trying to find someone with experience in rabbits that can actually give me guidence. I just dont want to do it unless an actual exotic vet says” yes , we need to so it ” cause I mean at the end, this article is talking about lethargy and diarrhea and also it is medication, I dont want to medicate her for a “just in case scenario ” unless told by a vet. Meds are meds, and I dont want to saturate her with meds unless told by a vet based on an web article.
Ill do the priobiotics though, I have researched and everyone is right that would be no harm at all, Im trying to get them.

                    Thank you Sarita

Im so happy, I just spoke to an actual exotic pet vet from a neighbor city , not only did he gave me his opinion, he did know what he was talking about ( a lot of expertise ) , he explained why the amoxicillin is dangerous, and gave me his best advise for my current situation, but not only that, God as usual listened to my prayers, he never leaves my side, the vet actually has a trip to my city tomorrow, and he will see my baby at whatever time Im available tomorrow ( since I work ) and he will check her.
Thank you for everyone who responded, you were much more help than the people I payed online to get professional advise from ( vetlive.com and justask.com )
And since this forum and site is meant to help, this is what the doctor said, for my specific case, in case someone like me one day finds themselves in the same situation and is desperatley looking for guidance:
                      – Amoxicillin as well as other antibiotics, are not good for rabbits ( unfortunately I found out too late ) and the reason is as the article says, it interrupts a special chain in their system, that controls their intestina flora , which basically causes that they can not make the cecotrapes ( the “poop” they eat ) that helps mantain their intestinal flora.
That being said, he said if my bunny is eating, drinking and acting normal ( which she is ) and no diarrhea is present, then we need to keep her on her normal diet, no meds and just keep observing her. He will still see her tomorrow, so he can validate that also.
I for sure will also be making sure she is making the cecotrapes and eating them.
He also said if she were to get diarrhea, then we give her the priobiotics ( he knew what he was talking about, I DID NOT MENTION THE PROBIOTICS, he brought it up, thats how I know he does have experience ). He can sell them to me, if neccesary ( I could not get them in my home town ! I called everywhere , no one knew what I was talking about )
So bottomline, I was looking for professional advise on what to do if my bunny was given amoxicillin: The vet said: If the bunny is acting fine, no diahhrea no lethargy, do not medicate. That was my main concern , ( what to do? is she seemed fine )
I will keep an eye on her, and hopefully both of my babies ( I have a male bunny too, just as old as she is ) will be by my side for much longer.
                      Thanks to everyone again.

Yay so glad you found a vet who knows and will see you tomorrow – great news.

I’m so glad you were able to get onto another vet and will be able to have her seen. You must be so relieved!
Definitely ask if ok to ring him over the coming days and weeks if you have further questions.

Hopefully the probiotics will help replenish the gut so it is in balance. Perhaps ask the vet if feeding her cecatrophes from your male rabbit will also help?

I know Questran (Cholestyramine resin) is a product that can be used as a preventative and for treatment if there is harmful bacteria overgrowth.
It binds to the harmful toxins. That might be something to have on hand just in case.

                          {{{Vibes}}} for your bunny !

I ll definately will keep that doctor’s phone at hand in case I need to call him again, he was very nice to me, and he comes to my town everyweek ! so now on top of things I have an actual vet for them, for anything that might come up . =)
Thats a very good idea , about asking him if she can eat my other bunnies cecatrophes, I wil ask him. =)

Sorry! I didn’t realise Questran was already mentioned in the medirabbit link.

What an ordeal. A vet gave a rabbit amoxicillin? Good lord! I hope you follow Roberta’s advice above and warn/inform that vet. It may well save someone else’s bunny in the future. So glad you found a caring exotics vet and best wishes and (((((vibes))))) to your little friend. Hope things turn out well.

That’s awesome. You and your bunny certainly did have someone helping from above, didn’t you? I’m so glad to hear you found such a caring vet. Many of them get so busy they wouldn’t be bothered. Sounds like a special doc
