So, I dehydrate my own apple slices, basically about 16 slices per apple. My question is, Velvet begs and begs till she eats about 6-8 slices per day, is this over doing it? She loves them, she also gets all the hay she wants, and about 4-5 leaves of Romain Lettuce per night. Very few pellets.

        She’s a 4 1/2 yo Jersey Wooly.

You should be feeding her unlimited grass hay, at least 3 cups of 3 different types of fresh veggies each day (not just romaine, could be romaine, cilantro, and parsley, etc.), and 1/4 cup of pellets (or less).

6-8 slices is way too much. Of course she’s going to beg for the yummy “candy” apples, but don’t give them to her. I give my bunnies 1 slice a day.

I agree that 6-8 slices is a lot, but of course it depends on the size of the apples. I’d allow 2 slices though if the bunny’s tummy is ok with it and there’s no over-weight issues. I too think you ought to give her more fresh greens and less apple and keep the hay unlimited. If you have your own apple-trees you can give twigs and small branches with or without leaves for your bun to chew, that’s healthy and often very popular.

I normally dehydrate my own apples, but this year we had a lousy crop on all our 8 trees so there’s none to dry. I dry apple-peel as well as slices, since apple-peel is low in sugar and high in micro nutrients it’s a good choice for bunnies.

She won’t chew apple twigs, nor willow twigs, nor does she chew any of our wood in the home, pretty lucky there. I guess we are going to have bunny withdrawal. She sure has became more people friendly, though, could never get close to her, now, she lets me pet her, and get one hand on her, then the other hand and set her on my lap. I hope that doesn’t stop. lol

You don’t have to go cold turkey on her, you can taper out the nr of slices over a few days, bunnies don’t respond so well to sudden dietary changes anyway.

Too bad she won’t chew twigs, it’s a favorite activity of my bunnies. But when you mention it, one of my bunnies have eaten parts of the wooden frame of my bed, so a fondness for wood is not always what you’d wish for in a bunny =)

I’m sure she won’t stop loving you if you cut back on the treats. Just divide them into smaller pieces so she still has to come right up to you to get one =) In my experience, when coming to get pet has become a habit, rabbits come for just the pets, even if there’s no candy at all involved.

She’s already had about 4 already today. When she’s on my lap, she crouches about as low as she can, ears back, heart racing. We got her at around 9 mo of age, and she was a 4H show bunny. Kept indoors in a Wire cage. Now during the day she can go any where in the house she wants to. At night she gets locked in a room in our basement, but, has the whole room to herself with a night lit. But, she is deathly afraid of being picked up, I assume being a 4H show bunny is not a very good life. She’s been with us now about 4 years but, still very untrusting, but, it’s getting better between myself and her, because, I’m disabled and am around her all day long. I guess I should try to hold her more and longer, but, if given the chance she will jump right off my lap, and hide. She’s becoming more trusting, so, I suppose, maybe just more interaction should help.

Many many rabbits don’t like to be picked up/held. My Bam has learned to relax in my mother’s knee, but my other bunny Yohio won’t have any of that. But that doesn’t mean he isn’t cuddly – he is super-cuddly and demands pets several times a day, every day. If I’m in bed trying to study he jumps up and tries to tear my note-.book away from me so I’ll have to stop writing and pet him instead. Try to pick him up though – he hyper-ventilates and his little heart races and he can’t wait to get away.

So I don’t think your bunny is in any way extra-untrusting if it’s just being picked up/held she doesn’t like. In the rabbit universe, being picked up/held is just one small step from being sb’s dinner.

Good to know, but, yeah, since discovering dehydrated apples, her fear of ME anyway, has become 75% less. She wouldn’t even let a hand get within 4 feet before!
