I noticed a couple days ago that Bunny had a broken toe nail on his back foot, but he would not stay still to let me look at it long enough for me to trim it, but I did notice dried blood. I had tried several times to look at it, but again, he just won’t stay still. He even got out of a blanket that was wrapped snugly (But not too tight) around him. Tonight it broke off. He did not bleed when the nail initially broke off. Just the dry blood is left. I have attached pictures of the severed nail. (It is quite long, but when I took him to the vet to get his nails trimmed, they did not do his back legs. They didn’t say why.) I checked to see where it broke and it broke on the quick. Not sure how much past the starting point. How do I treat his leftover nail? The vet is closed over the weekend, so I will have to wait to take him. I have read that antibiotic ointment is best, but I am not sure if the kind I have is suitable. It does NOT say pain relief on the bottle or box. Here are the ingredients:

        Bacitracin 400 units

        Neomycin 3.5 mg

        Polymyxin B 5,000 units

        Inactive is Petrolatum

Also, do I need to bandage his foot? I wouldn’t think so, but i thought it might stop him from licking it.

a broken nail will grow back. its probably scarier for you to look at than it is for the bun.
while i’m sure it hurt breaking off, any exposed nerve areas will scab over within hours and he’ll be fine. you dont need to bandage.
if he feels he needs to baby the foot a little ,he will do that.

if you used antibiodic ointment, that is probably what he is licking. don’t glop it on heavy (plus you dont want to soften the scab open)
it’s not likely you need to see a vet. unless you see him hobbling, but check for any signs of swelling which might mean infection developing.

even if he ended up breaking the toe, there’s not much a vet can do for a single toe. it will heal and be a bit wonky, but it wont affect him overall
