I have a parrot cage stack that I was going to turn into a rat cage but I realized that our pet rats are getting old and will be dying soon so I am just going to leave them in their current cages. There are 3 stacked cages that are all one piece and are 3 feet wide, 2 feet deep and 2′ tall so 6′ tall total. If I modify the cage pans to the top 2 cages and cut some of the bars that hold the pans up I could make it one big cage. I would add shelves and ramps for easy access to the different levels. My rabbit is just under 4lb and will have free run of my bedroom except for during storms when my mom’s husky has to be crated in my room but even then I could have a x-pen attached to the cage so he still has room to move around. I guess I just want to know if the cage would be big enough as the place where I keep his food, water, litterbox, the bulk of his toys and for a place where he can hang out when he wants to be by himself? Also would I need a litterbox on each level or just the bottom one?

Since you’re going to be supplementing the space with free roaming and x-pen access, this should be fine. If you weren’t going to do that, it would be too small, but since you are, it should be fine. You basically just want to make sure that the bun has enough room to stretch out all the way so that they can relax and sleep.

You only need one litterbox – I would suggest putting it on the bottom level for ease of access and to keep the area clean. What is the bottom of the cage? I’m assuming it has a solid floor of some kind, but if not, you will want to make a solid floor of some kind; plastic, wood, linoleum, vinyl all would work.

Thanks, the door on the bottom level is not even on the cage so he will not be locked in it at all. The floors of the cage are metal pull out trays so I will be covering them with blankets or something soft.

It sounds like it is very tall and narrow. Bunnies do better with a more horizontal space. I would be worried about falling from the top level, and the whole structure tipping. Plus, assuming you’re not a professional basket ball player, how are you going to reach the top level if it’s almost 6′ high?

Is there a way to put 2 of them side by side, and only staking 1 on top?

With each level being 2 feet tall and the flooring only being 2×3, the ramps would likely be too steep; without ramps, the jump would be pretty high. I would be concerned about accidental injury. Honestly, if you have an xpen, you really can do without the cage. I would just use the xpen. I’ve seen quite a few BBers make nice cozy setups with just xpens. Since your bun has plenty of free roam time, just using the xpen will also make cleaning alot easier. If you really want your bun to have a “home base” in addition to the xpen, you’d be better off finding a used good sized dog crate and attaching the xpen to it.

Thanks, once Tainted is liter trained I will be taking down the x-pen so he will have the whole room and I was thinking that instead of just having his litter box, food & water in a corner that it would be nice to put them in the cage so he has a space that the dogs and cats would stay out of. The x-pen would just be for when I take my mom’s husky in my room during storms. The cage is very heavy and would not tip over. I posted a picture of it below but keep in mind that it would be sanded down, repainted and have the feeder holders removed. It would also have shelves put in so the ramps would not be very steep and the rabbit could not fall move then 1′ which is about the same as most of the boxes I use for hides for rabbits. I can reach the top level fine as I am 5′ 10″. If it does not seem like a good idea then I don’t mind just having his stuff in the corner like I had for Twig.
