I’m probably a bit early asking this, but most of the online places seem to be getting their 2014 2nd cut timothy and orchard grass in the barns now.

Anyone gotten any 2014 crop hay that is super green and leafy? If so, where did you order it from?

        Thanks!

I got my last 50# box from BunnyBale.. hmm beginning of July I think it was. It was really nice and pretty green, compared to the box I got from them last August (which was yummy and fresh too!). But this last box was more softer pieces than the stalky ones. I’d say more than half. The buns are REALLY happy about it. They still like last August’s hay, and eat it nicely, but this new box gets them all crazy. I have no idea if it was first cut or not (would July be around the time for a first cut? I dunno). Looking at their hay ordering list, they don’t specify what cut it is, which is weird cuz I could have sworn I saw several options when I ordered last August.

Anyway, not very helpful I know, sorry. But they do have a contact us page where you can ask. http://www.bunnybale.com/contactus.html

NO idea – all of Henry’s hay comes out of an Oxbow bag straight off the shelf!
How wonderful you get the choice and are making the most of it! Sooooo LUCKY!

I just got a bag of 2014 hay and the buns are on it like a house (or two houses) on fire (I realize this may not be the proper expression). We’ve had summers these last two summers like I can’t remember ever having experienced in my life – and I’m old =) If this is global warming, I’m all in favour of it.

(A joke of course, global warming is not about more sunshine in Scandinavia. I know that.)

No one here would take that the wrong way bam – we all know ‘exactly’ what you mean!

And if I could share my QLD sunshine with you bam, I would!

Pretty sure 1st cut is around late June or July, 2nd cut is toward the end of the hay season in early September. I try to buy 2nd cut when possible, because my bunnies seem to like the leafy parts and because I hate being stabbed by sharp stems when making up my “go to” boxes. I’ve spoken with the BunnyBales folks and theirs is 1st cut. I’ve gotten a sample of their hay (not yet this season; was very green and not as stiff as most 1st cut), but the pieces in the sample were super short — is the hay in the bulk boxes in really short pieces? Small Pet Select says they won’t have their new 2nd cut in until early next week (last year’s was very stalky). KMS has theirs in as does Sierra Valley (SV said theirs is stalkier this year due to later cut because of rain). Ordered some KMS and a sample from SV, along with some orchard grass hay from both to try. Have never tried Farmer Dave’s hay. APD shipping is way too high for me. I haven’t found any place to order Oxbow in bulk direct.

Thanks for the info about the cut! I got a sample thing from them too, added on cuz it was free with my order. You are right, those pieces were super short, like bottom of the barrel kinda stuff. The 50# boxes I’ve had were mostly long pieces. Some longer than one side of the box. I fill up my go to box every other day. Honestly at this point I don’t know why I even bother to continue using it now that I have 3 buns. But anyway!… it’s 12″x14″ and I pretty much always have to bend in the more stalky pieces so it will fit. If you want, pm me your address and I’ll send you a few handfuls of what I got the last time so you can see, hmm and some of last year’s stuff so you can see how well it kept.
