First of let me say hi I am new to the forums, so hi!

We adopted our bunny Bramble when he was just six weeks old and he has been an absolute joy from day one, other than the quik of his nails being really long meaning his nails have to be left quite long as well, we have had no problems in any way.

I had made the decision to get him neutered as soon as he was old enough but the vet said his testicles had not descended enough at 15 weeks when we took him (actually at that point we were considering the fact that he might be a girl) so we were told to leave it another few weeks.

He had his op yesterday (he is 22 weeks old now) and the vet said he had been fine although when fixing a chipped tooth at the same time they did notice molar spurs which are apparently uncommon in young rabbits, they have filed them down though so hopefully with the right diet and regular check ups he will be fine.

My concern is that he is not drinking. We went for a check up this afternoon and saw the surgeon who preformed his op, she asked me about his eating and drinking and I told her that he was eating a small amount and had only drank a tiny amount, more worryingly he seems to have only done a single tiny pee. He took his fiberplex fine yesterday, in fact I think he quite liked it but this morning he ended up wearing most of it because he was trying desperately to avoid having to swallow it. He did take his painkiller without problem.

The vet gave him a jag today and told me to keep a close eye on him tonight and come back tomorrow. He has done plenty of poos, but no more pee. until about five minutes before I started writing this he had drank absolutely nothing since he came home, he took a tiny drink then and I do mean tiny. he usually drinks quite a lot.

All the rabbits I have had in the past have came to me neutered so I am not too familiar with what’s normal. The vet seemed a little worried and told me if he had not peed again by morning they would need to do something. I am assuming he is not peeing because he is not drinking, or is he not drinking because something is stopping him peeing? Should I try syringing some water into his mouth?

He is eating tiny amounts, but the vet said as long as he was eating and still taking the fiberplex and doing poos she wasn’t too concerned about the eating, more the lack of pee.

Can anyone with more experience with a recently neutered bun help put my mind at rest? or should I call the emergency vet (its 8.30 pm here so regular vet is closed)

          Welcome : )

Does he have a water bowl or sipper bottle?

It could be because his mouth is tender. I imagine a bowl for now would be best. Put it close to him. I noticed after my girls were spayed that they had a drink after I put the bowl right near them. They didnt want to move around much those first few days.

If you still have trouble getting him to drink, flavour the water a little or give him some wet greens.

          Hope he’s feeling better soon.

He usually has a bottle, but I have put a small bowl of water in as well just now. He just kicked sawdust into it to be honest, I tried flavouring it with a tiny bit of blackcurrant since the vet told me to do that with his medicine but he didn’t show any interest in that either. Since I posted he has had another tiny drink, so I am not as worried as I was but still a little worried.

I gave him a piece of carrot earlier on in the day and he took one bite, I think its too hard for him just now because of his teeth. I know when I had dental surgery it was a struggle for me to eat anything other than soup for a few days so im assuming he will be feeling the same. I tried him with a tiny bit of broccoli and he loved it, but I know that causes gas so I am reluctant to give him any more, on the other hand if that is all he will eat maybe I should.

I think tomorrow I will buy some bananas, I wish I had thought of that earlier but there are no shops open just now to get any.

Wet greens are the best for just after surgery. But, my boy didn’t drink for three days after his surgery (not even a drop) and the vet told us to get an eye dropper and put a little water into his mouth, to prevent dehydration. If he is drinking SOME and eating greens, he should be OK and your vet will be able to tell if he’s dehydrated. They could give him some fluids at the vet if he needs it.

I don’t think its so much that he is not drinking that is the worry, its that he hasn’t peed. the vet seemed quite concerned by that. She told me to dilute his antibiotic with blackcurrant juice to make him take it since it apparently tastes horrible so I think what I will do is just dilute it with quite a lot of juice that way I know he has drank something. We have an appointment in the morning for the vet so not too much longer to sit and worry. I will pop some more veg in for him before I go to bed as well. I am now going to attempt to give him his fiberplex and antibiotic before bed, wish me luck!

I just wanted to let you all know that Bramble seems to be doing much better today. He is eating and drinking small amounts but most importantly he has peed and pooed. The vet said she thinks he is on the mend now but to keep an eye on him over the weekend and bring him back Monday just to be sure, he certainly seems more like himself today, all be it a drowsy version of himself. The only issue is he has decided that he really doesn’t like the fiberplex after all, the vet said to water it down and put it in another syringe and try that, but the last dose ended up all over my floor when he leapt from my partners grasp to avoid taking it. I suppose now that he is eating a bit better the fiberplex is not as important though so I am not too worried.
