My little girl Luna is going to the vet tomorrow for her spay.

She is my first and only female bunny so I don’t really know what to expect when bringing her home after. When Neji had his op he was a bit out of it for a couple of days but healed really well, although it was 3 1/2 years ago. Am I right in thinking that the female op is more intense and risky?

I phoned my vet and they told me not to steer away from her regular routine before hand, so she can have her evening and breakfast pellets as usual.

Is there anything I should know or do, can you guys give me some tips on how to make her more comfortable when she comes home or maybe what I should expect and do/ not do?

So yeah this is new to me and I just don’t know.

Thanks in advance for any tips etc

I was pretty nervous when I got my rabbit spayed so that’s pretty normal. I would just make sure she is in an area she cant jump in. I put my girl and boy both in an expen and made sure there was something soft to lay on. I made sure the litter box, food and water dishes were all close so she wouldn’t have to go far to get to them. I gave her wet greens and her favorite treats. Mine seemed to do well but I did have a scare the second day because she went a good while without going to the bathroom and my vet told me to give her some sweet potato baby food to help get her digestive track moving again. I had to feed her with a syringe. She was pretty much back to normal the next day. I kept her in the expen for almost 3 days because she loved to jump on the bed I didn’t want her to get hurt.
I hope things go well. best of luck to you and your bun!

Well it will differ from each bun but as you mentioned it can be intense

I think what I’ve read and witnessed with my own bun is that they take it harder. As far as what to expect, the female bun tends to chill out. My bun was observed to lie down a lot for the first 24 hours. Not really moving or doing much.

I think the biggest concerns is to make sure you keep the digestive track going so eating is a big concern. I tried to leave her alone to recoup but would occasionally feed her wet greens to make sure she had something to eat and some water. As long as you can get her to nibble on stuff that sould be good.

I believe all the tell tale signs of a successful procedure In humans or animals is eating, drinking, pooping and urinating. So once I saw that she was doing all 4 I felt better.

As far as the wound goes you want to check to see that she isn’t licking or biting the area. The vet should show you what it looks like and what to look for.

Finally try to limit her excercise and movement so that she’s not hopping around too much at first

Expect her to be very tired when she gets home. It will take several days for her to feel like herself again. Ask your vet about sending home pain meds. Some vets do, some don’t. In my experience, they need pain meds after a spay. And make sure to have all her fave greens/herbs on hand to entice her to eat.

Thanks for these helpful comments guys. She is at the vets now and I can pick her up at 4.20 later (I’m in the UK, it is lunch time now).
I am a bit worried now and i can’t wait to pick her up and bring her home. I bought some kale as it is her fave.
                Just waiting now.

Hi. We have been back home for over an hour now and she seems a bit uncomfortable as she is being fidgety ~ which I guess is to be expected.
I think the spay went smoothly and she seemed happy to see me when I picked her up. The vet has given me Metacam to give her once a day starting tomorrow.
I think she is ok but she has not eaten yet.

As the hours go by and she adjusts try hand feeding her favorite veggies. Give them wet so she’ll have some moisture

It has been five hours since brining her home and she hasn’t eaten anything. She is clearly in a lot of pain and I am a bit worried.
They didn’t tell me if she had eaten after the op and I didn’t think to ask so she may have gone longer without eating. She woke up from anaesthetic at 1.30. It is 9.30pm here now

I think mine didn’t eat until 12 hours. Have you tried with everything. Even like banana?

So it is 1.30 in the morning now, 12 hours since the op, and she hasn’t eaten. I really don’t know what to do, she took a treat but that is it and wouldn’t take anymore. I don’t have any fruit to give her. I thought I should ring the vets if this continues to 4am but my husband said the care sheet that the vets gave us says between 12-24 hours so we could wait until morning and phone the vets when it opens. I definitely don’t remember having to fuss over Neji like this.
