I have a small corner litter box that I use for my 3 year old mini rex rabbit. I empty the litter box daily but it still smells terrible. I am wondering if anyone has hints on keeping it smelling fresh? I have tried all different kinds of bedding but it is still very smelly. I’m just looking for suggestions.

        Thanks!

They arent neutered yet and thats probably why theres a problem with the smell. But they will be soon we finally found a place to get it done!! Is your bun neutered or spayed?

We just clean ours (litterboxes not bunnies!) with white vinegar and water occasionally and they don’t smell, and we use Carefresh natural beddung for litter, changed every night. The only thing that smells with our buns are squishy cecals and when somebunny has a need to open their scent glands!

I’ll try to wash the actual litter box. Hopscotch is neutered. I do noticed a smell on him sometimes and I assume he needs his scent glands cleaned but I just haven’t been able to do it. He will not let me do it and I don’t want to force him too much.

And what I mean by “I can’t do it” is that he will not let me get him on his back or put him into a bunny burrito. I’ve tried lots of times and I just can’t do it. I’ve watched videos, read articles and had people try to help me. It just seems like it’s just too hard.

The scent glands generally don’t smell all the time, just when they open then and then it smells musky, often like a skunk. That smell will dissipate after a few minutes.

Try buying a new litterbox. After 3 years sometimes the smells just build up and never really come out. A fresh box should help. Clean it often with white vinegar.
If you can afford 2 boxes, you can cycle them so they aren’t always being used, and then you can give them a really good, long soak in vinegar without worrying that your bunny doesn’t have a bathroom.

That’s a good idea. I always clean it out fast so he doesn’t have an accident. I think I’ll buy another and soak my current one over night in vinegar.

Just clean it often. I have four litter boxes (yes, four, haha.) in case one gets really stinky, or one breaks.. Have you tried Woodstove pellets? That’s what I use, and it’s not stinky at all. Plus when it’s clean, the fresh wood smells nice.

FWIW, I clean my with a white vinegar solution and thus far, it’s worked OK. I agree with the poster who suggested that over three years, smell is going to get a lot harder to get out.
