I rent, and we have been having a funky smell when we turn the a/c on. Since we rent, we don’t want to fix things ourselves obviously.. so I asked them to take a look, my dad does hvac and said change filter or could be a little leak in return air duct (simple fix, but called our landlord)

so, they don’t tell you when they come. I was running late to work wednesdays and couldn’t catch Dozer… he is my absolute worst when it comes to litter habits, I do not know why. He poops all over his pen but not in his box, but pees in his box. (I initially got him as a foster, thought we might keep him, now we probably can’t even

freaking maintenance guy comes in, says he changed filter  and left the slip that says “smells like rabbit” what does that even mean?! I use glade plug ins, and another diffuser, I think my house smells nice (except when we change the boxes, we use pine pellets now and it smells strongly of them the first day we change the bedding) and that there were “rabbit droppings everywhere” there seriously was not. he pooped next to the hay bag, they all do that and I usually have time before work to vacuum it up, plus he was out for four hours without me.

I’m mortified, and also super scared we will be evicted! they are a very pet friendly community, dogs are allowed… even pit bulls, the lady two townhomes down from me has a million freaking cats (she rescues them, she is disabled but sits outside with all these cats roaming around…they’re all trained pretty well unless they pee on my lawn which I’ve seen.

I’m just freaking out. I haven’t been sleeping (I’m an anxious person to begin with, but the thought of being threatened to get rid of my rabbits is consuming me.) I have seriously bad luck. I always say I must have been a serial killer in a past life, bad things happen to me quite often. the past few years have taken a toll on me, I can’t go through another move, especially with the two kids…I had neighbors buy the place I lived in before because they didn’t like me! and they kicked me out at christmas! had to live in a one bedroom with two kids for three months, had a bad car accident, then a new apartment, then a tree fell on my new car, then moved here… got the rabbits sometime in between of all this. oh yeah, it all happen within less than two years time. no lie.

so, I’m overwhelmed, and hoping they don’t say anything. if they do I’m trying to think of how to respond.

the rabbits are not in the lease. we lived in an apartment they own (it’s a large complex, three locations) and got Lucky.. I had emailed asking if we could have a rabbit and they emailed back sure! no pet fee because it’s a rabbit. (they have fees for cats and dogs) I must have permanently deleted the email. I also don;t have them on the new lease when we moved across the street to the townhome. I should have asked about the rabbits, but the tree fell on the car around the time we moved so we were crazy busy.

this is crazy long, I needed somewhere to vent. my boyfriend knows I’m an anxious person but says I’m completely overreacting. I’ve told him with my luck, I know they will say something. we have a new property manager and doesn’t seem to like me like the last lady did. ugh. I just want to know what they think about it! and the new day there was a survey to fill out from them in the mail box and one of the questions was if we have pets, so now I feel like we’re the only ones who got the note.

gah, I wish I could stop worrying! I was thinking of making them my emotional support animals. Not sure if my doctor would help me, he has signs up that they do not write notes for disability so not sure how he’d feel about this.

Hmm this is a hard situation.
I hate when people pop in unannounced. In my opinion it’s not the maintenance guy’s buisness if your house smells like rabbits or not. Especially rude that he left you a not that said things smelled like rabbits. Hopefully nothing bad will happen to you or your buns. Don’t let it worry you sick until something is said to you from the landlord. Maybe keep the place extra clean in-case the landlord wants to come check out the situation.
          Good Luck! *Hugs*

If the landlord asks, then invite them to come take a look at what the maintenance man was referring too. Of course, make sure everything is really clean when they come over. And then walk over to the hay bag and show them where there were a couple of coco puffs. BUT look, no harm done.

I’m horrible, but I would have a need, if the landlord comes to take a look, to freak him out by picking up one of those coco puffs near the hay, break it open and show him that it’s pretty much just hay powder inside. Offer him a sniff so he can see they don’t smell! He may think you’re insane, but what the heck! Just make sure no cecals are laying around!

Everyone who doesn’t have rabbits always thinks that rabbit poop is like dog poop.

He probably only commented on the smell b/c you had him out to check on a “funny smell” from your AC. Since you had turned the AC off, the funny smell from it wasn’t noticeable. I don’t think the comment about the smell was meant as criticism, just informing you that he couldn’t find the AC smell you asked him to eliminate.

Honestly, your home probably smells like hay, but you’re so used to the smell of hay you don’t notice it anymore. I know there is a hay smell in Porky’s room, but I haven’t actually smelled it myself for years. I did smell it when we first got him, and I don’t believe it’s just magically disappeared, but I don’t smell it. It’s not a bad smell, like when the litterbox needs changing, but it’s there. I think it’s a good smell, like when people talk about loving the smell of fresh cut grass, but more earthy since it’s dry.

JR— When I went over to find out more information about buns and look at Moxie’s litter, the person I bought Moxie from took a coco puff and broke it open to show us. Since it was my first time seeing rabbit droppings in person, I was startled when she put the poop right in front of my face and broke it open. Ha ha ha.

or go buy a box of actual coco puffs and scatter them about the place before the next inspection
then you can just start picking them up and eating them. maybe even offering them some

When we went to meet Lucky at his foster home, the husband picked up a poop with his bare hands.. I was like “omg!” and so was my boyfriend, we thought he was so gross lol. And then we learned how it’s just not gross.

I’m trying to stay calm about it, I haven’t heard anything other than a request to update information from everyone (it was a flyer in our mailbox, asking for phone numbers, cars/license plates, pets we got a new co manager)

my mom says to just say they’re fosters, which I might do. but they know about Lucky so I’ll definitely put him down

I can guarantee you the place with all the cats smells worse. I only have 3 but they have no trouble out stinking the bunnies. Same with dogs, no matter what you do a big dog is going to be obvious by it’s odor. If there is a new property manager I would say everyone got the questionaire. The new property owner may be pushing for a change of fees for pet owners or trying to catch out anyone that has them clandestinely. You stated the owners know about your bunnies so you haven’t done anything wrong and I am sure they realise you would move your pets with you. It wouldn’t hurt to speak to some of the other pet owners in your rental community and ask them if they received the document just to set your mind at rest. Plus by getting to know the other tenants if necessary you can form a group later to deal with the new property manager if they are not pet friendly.

                            Thanks for the advice everyone.
Roberta, I’m going to ask my neighbors if they received it as well.. they’ve been here 14 years and do whatever they please, so I don’t think management ever even talks to them lol, but they’re very nice. The lady next to them is the one with the millions of cats (I’m sure when I go outside with my xpen and let my bunnies have time outside, I look like a nut like her haha) There is no way her house doesn’t smell, I had two cats and keeping up the box was difficult… and her’s are huge cats.. like, obese.
I think I’m just freaking out because I’m an anxious person in general. I’m going to go to the office to talk to them, and if they bring it up I’ll explain that it’s not the norm (I have two kids, I obviously don’t just let poop stay out all the time but yes it’s on the floor randomly as you all experience)

I’m just glad they didn’t see the kids bedroom! Dozer messed the carpet up in there, we have to get it done ourselves, there’s no way I’d want them to see it before we redo the carpet!
