My rabbit is madly in love with bananas, so much that he ran after my hand and bit my finger when it smelled like it, but unfortunately, it upsets his stomach and he always gets diarrhea.

Would banana flavored sweets do the same? I’m afraid dry bananas might, since I’ve dried carrots for him and it would still upset his tummy, and there are no banana flavored treats here, so I’d have to order them online. Before ordering them (as they would come as slightly expensive with the shipping), I would like to know if anyone had a similar problem: fresh food upsets a rabbit’s tummy, but flavored treats not.

When you say diarrhea, are his poops actually runny/messy or ode he just have softer poops? How much banana do you give him?
My guess is “flavored treats” would be extremely unhealthy. Where do you plan to order them?

Keep in mind that while dried fruits with nothing added are healthy treats, you have to be careful not to give too much (they are naturally sweet and too many can upset the flora in the bun’s digestive system). Think of the size of the carrot or banana piece before dehydrating to determine how many pieces are appropriate since all that’s been done is removing the water. When dehydrating carrots (I haven’t dehydrated anything else yet), I cut the carrots into @ 1/8 inch think slices. A treat for each of my bunnies would be 4 small or 2 large broken in half for Moshi (he has a sensitive tummy), 3 or 4 any size for Marlee and Kieko. I try to break the larger ones in half so they think they’re getting more, and mine do not get sugary treats like carrots every day.

Oxbow fruit treats are Ok since they only contain dried fruit with nothing added, but mine prefer fresh fruit.

I’m guessing, like many of us have done, that you may be giving too many bites (which will cause mushy poop). Try just giving one piece of the dried treat every other day to start and see if you still get mushy poop. You can offer other treats such as a bite of greens, willow, oat hay seed heads, and even a few pellets or a hand-fed piece of hay (anything hand-fed is “special” to bunnies!).

Edit: All three of mine will choose an oat hay seed head or a bite of greens/herbs over fruit!

Personally, I’d be skeptical of banana-flavored stuff, because that would suggest that the treats may be chemically treated somehow. My rabbits love bananas, too. I keep them to one slice of freeze-dried banana every day, and that amount hasn’t had a negative effect on their digestive system. Maybe you could try reducing the amount of banana you give your bunny before trying the banana-flavored treat?

His poop is just one black, watery lump smeared over the floor as he moves. It doesn’t have form of any sort, it’s too soft.

The treats I give him contain fresh fruit in them in a very little amount (up to 5%), and he loves them a lot. Plus, they don’t cause him any problems, which is great. Regarding the dried carrots, instead of cutting it into pieces, i’d shave it very thin, narrow, and dry it. So, in the end it would be almost like paper, and it would still cause him issues.

We tried reducing the amount of raw fruit, and no matter how little we gave him (he never got a chunk of it in the first place), it’d still upset his tummy.

Seeing how much he likes banana, I feel bad not giving him some, yet I know what will happen if I do

I’ll try freeze-dry some bananas to see whether it will upset his tummy or not TaT
