So I was making stir fry earlier for tea and I chopped up some spring onions then Zorro hopped to my feet so I bent down to give him a stroke and as soon as he got a whiff of my hands he ran like it was the most terrifying thing. Again a few minutes later (after I washed hands) I went to him and he bolted. Now he is hiding I a corner and will only come out momentarily for me or my dad if we have food and only after I’ve washed my hands and soaked them about four times and slathered toothpaste on myself. Have opened windows etc to try rid of onion smell.

        Has anyone else experienced this?

Well, not exactly this but I think rabbits have an aversion to certain odors – some can be very sensitive to certain smells…they have good sniffers I think :~)

Most people dont know this but farmers will plant onions around a crop so that rabbits won’t eat it. They hate the smell! So dont worry, he isnt scared. He just doesnt like the scent of onions! (Ironically some farmers dont know this) perhaps you could plant onions in areas you dont want him getting into

Wonder if you could plant onions around a sofa?!

If you have lemon juice or maybe some hand sanitizer handy you could rub some on your hands to avoid the toothpaste “cologne”.

Thanks guys, he seems to have calmed down now. He even did a couple of binkys when I gave him a couple of wood chews. (After calming down from his episode of onion fear he has developed the need to chew which he didn’t have before).

I’ve been thinking about this and you may be on to something here! They make bitter apple and bitter lime sprays as chew deterrents for dogs, why not “bitter onion” for use with bunnies?!

Wonderful idea! Now what else will we put into this mystical chew deterrent? Water, of course. Now, what else?

I’ll have to try onion scent on areas I dont want them to go! I hope it works.

The only problem with that is that the bitter apple and lime smells would be nice in your home but onion smells? Not so much!
