So I groom Ernie pretty regularly, usually by gently plucking at his loose fur the way another bunny would. Today I was plucking at his forehead and he seemed to really like it (I often use my finger as an imitation bunny tongue and give him “kisses” on his forehead, which he loves). I kept gently plucking and the next thing I knew almost his whole head (besides his eyebrows and nose) was this really really short dark fur. Like, much shorter than anything I’ve seen when I groom the rest of his body. I’m worried I over groomed him! Is this possible? Does it hurt him? He seems to be fine but I’m worried that he was not so much relaxed as he was too scared to move? I would hate to think I hurt him! He does seem to be acting normal now but he looks like a weird freak! In my eyes he’s still just as sweet and adorable as ever.

Sounds like it felt good to get that loose fur off and let his new fur shine through! As long as it was loose, I think you just helped it along.

When Kieko’s face is molting we help it along and she pushes her face out and tooth purrs.

Haha. The first time I did that to Bumpy, I worried the same thing! He was loving it, I am sure, but yes, I freaked out a bit when I was finished.

Just sounds like he’s starting a molt.

The new coat under the old coat during a molt is often surprising different. The molt frequently takes in patches on bunnies, unlike on cats that tend to shed evenly all over their body. It’s normal to see distinct line on the bunny of dark sleek new coat vs old light fuzzy coat.

Thanks everyone. I feel better. I wish I knew how to post pictures on here so I could show you what a little weirdo he is!

Some rabbits molt like that. Sounds exactly like how one of mine did. And i would pluck like that for the loose fur and he loved it too and not normally one to sit and be pet. The short new fur did quickly grow out but he looked funny for a week or so. It seems tort lops have a real noticeable molt too just from their coloring. My sister had one and even breeder pics online show the molting being so obvious.
