I was brushing my rabbit, Thumper, today, when suddenly I realized that something was wrong with her skin. I immediately stopped brushing her and examiened it. It looked like a bite. I knew Thumper was bit either by my other rabbit (they aren’t bonded, but I try to bond them) or was cut by something. There wasn’t a cut anywhere else on her body. Right now, Thumper is in her cage. I want too see if I can do something before spending money to see a vet. I know Thumper wasn’t outside lately. She is an indoor bunny. Is there a cream or something I can do. Please help. Thanks.

Bites can lead to abscesses and that can be serious. Are you certain it is a bite?

How deep does the wound look and where is it on your bunny ? Abscesses are a real concern.

I’m most certain its a bite. If you would like to see a picture check my page. I posted one. It’s red, and looks like a bite. It isn’t that deep and it’s on her back.

Whether or not it needs vet attention will depend how deep and serious the cut is and whether there is a likely hood of exposure to disease like rabies. Since you know the bite is from another pet rabbit and not a wild animal you don’t need to worry about things like rabies. Since you didn’t notice it till you were grooming her, it doesn’t sound like a serious wound.

Keep an eye on it looking for signs of infection. I would avoid putting any kind of ointment on it designed for humans, since a rabbit will lick it off and ingest it.

Basically it’s a bubble of infection trapped in the body.

Here’s a link to the wiki about it, but only click if you are not squeamish, there are lots of pictures.

That doesn’t look like the skin is broken even though it is very red… It does look like a big tuft of fur has been pulled out though.. I’d keep and eye on it and if there is no improvement in a couple of days speak to your vet about something for the irritation and redness. If it stays red and starts to look flaky I would go to the vet straight away.

I looked at the pictures. I agree with Roberta, it looks like a tuft of fur was pulled out and it took the top layer of skin with it. It is obviously red and irritated, but it doesn’t look like the skin was actually punctured. You can put a little bit of original Neosporin (not the kind with a pain reliever) on it, but it may not even need that. I would just keep an eye on it and if it looks worse, then consult a vet.
