        Hey all.

So tonight I was giving Theodore an extra handful of hay before turning in for the night. He always has hay at all times, but he seems to love it when the supply gets refreshed.

His hay is kept right next to the enclosure, right next to his litterbox, so it’s easy for me to put more hay in there and in the basket attached. So, he can see and hear when I’m about to give him some more hay. Recently, I switched to Oxbow Western Timothy Hay from Kaytee Timothy Hay. As much as he loved the Kaytee, he looovveesss the Oxbow hay.

As I was reaching into the bag and extracting some for him, he stood on his hind legs and started nodding his head up and down, very similarly to this. He stopped once I gave him the hay and immediately began munching it with gusto. His head stopped nodding, and was not tilting or shaking or anything after he got the hay. His ears are completely clean and he’s still in perfect health.

I’m guessing that this is just a behavior that signifies excitement, but I’m having no luck finding any description of this behavior anywhere and I was wondering if anyone else’s bunnies do this? It reminds me of a bird behavior, when birds bob their heads up and down. I know that for them, this is to help them maximize their ability to see due to how their eyes work, so maybe this is similar?

        Thoughts?

I think you’re right. Rabbits can’t see well directly in front of their faces so he probably was excited and trying to get a better look. Marlee does cute little head things when I ‘m getting ready to give salads. She gets so excited she can hardly contain herself. Tonight she tried to climb up my leg while I was getting them ready, and she looked like a bobble-head bunny!

To be honest it’s kind of relieving to hear this. I’m glad someone else’s bunny does something similar. That must be what it is — an attempt to try and get a better look.

Wooly sort of nods. He will throw his head backward rapidly when he’s trying to climb up my leg to get to a treat. I don’t know if it is an attempt to keep his focus on the treat as he starts to lose his balance (he will get way up on his tippy toes).

Again, glad to hear this. Bunnies on their tip-toes are hilarious.
