Our 7 month old girl was spayed on Thursday, she was doing really well, eating, going to the bathroom, a lot of energy, affectionate. Today I made a big mistake, I have been letting her out while I clean her cage, but today when I let her out, she jumped on the couch and jumped off. She didn’t seem in pain, but this morning when I checked the incision it appears she may have opened it a bit. Our normal vet is gone through Labor day, so she won’t be back until Tuesday. The only emergency vet equipped to deal with rabbits is about two and a half hours away. I called an emergency line that let’s you speak with a tech, I told her what happened, that she is still eating and pooping normally (aka a ton), is super hyper, affectionate, and doesn’t seem to be in pain. I washed my hands and touched the incision area, it didn’t feel any more warm than the rest of her belly, and she didn’t get upset or jump back when I touched it. I have a picture at the link below. What is really concerning is it appears to be open a bit and if you zoom in you can see one of the stitches. The vet did the internal sutures and a layer of skin glue. My main question, is it worth stressing her with 5 hours total in the car, or should I do as the vet tech said and wait and keep monitoring it?http://m.imgur.com/Rx3rmmg
I am definitely taking her to the normal vet on Tuesday.

I can’t tell too much from the photo but her incision seems small compared to what girls had!
If its just the outer layer of skin that’s opened, it *should* be ok to monitor until you can visit your normal vet.

Last year I looked after a friends rabbit post-op. She licked her incision until it began to open. She had internal sutures and glue for outer layer. The vet didnt re-glue the area. She just put bun on an antibiotic as a precaution and we just had to keep an eye on the site, keep it clean and watch for infection. The skin eventually knitted together. The owner took her off the antibiotic early as it upset the stomach. 1 year on an the bun is great.
My 1st rabbit Jersey had a slight opening at top of her incision. The clinic told me not to worry and to keep eye open for changes.

If she’s acting her usual self and there doesn’t appear to be signs of infection, it should be okay (IMO) to monitor for now.

Thank you! I was really alarmed by the color, I ended up calling a small animal vet at the University of Georgia since that would be the closest emergency vet that is really good, he said based on how she is acting and there is no discharge, I would be ok to wait, but to call back and come in if anything changed, luckily I am off the next couple days to make sure she is ok. It isn’t her entire incision either, just a small part of it which is probably why it looks little. We are now keeping her confined so she can’t further damage it until we see our vet.

Thanks a ton for replying. I spoke with a vet who specializes in exotics and rabbits at UGA, it’s the closest reputable vet for rabbits that’s 24 hours, he told me the same things as you, and just told me to keep an eye on it, he said that if it gets worse, or she acts in pain, or I notice a fever or discharge to call him back, but that I should be good until Tuesday, and not to make the drive unless it got bad. I checked again, it is just the top layer, I was just so scared, I’ve never had a bun go through a spay or any surgery before, thank you! If anything changes, I will update

Sorry about the double replies, I’m new to this site, but when we got home tonight, and checked the incision, there is no redness anymore, no signs of infection, no oozing, and super excited when she heard the veggie bags. I’ll keep keeping an eye on it. I would take another picture but don’t want to continue to stress her out.
