I haven’t posted in a couple of weeks cause I’ve been so busy and now I need help!

So I go to give Luna and Teddy dinner and they’re rushing to eat, (as they do) and I’m hearing this weird noise, like a gurgling sound?
Suddenly there’s a big blob of spit on the floor and Luna’s wiping her face!
Then Teddy’s making a weird retching kinda noise and then he’s dribbling spit mixed with food!

        I am freaked out!

I mean, if I didn’t know better I’d say they were throwing up, but I know they can’t do that.
I don’t think it can be their teeth since they had them checked not long ago. They’re happily eating and they seem to have stopped doing the retching thing now, so I’ve calmed down a bit..

I don’t know what to think! We’re they just trying to eat too fast?

We’ll be going to the vet tomorrow either way.

It’s entirely possible that they both were eating way too fast that they pushed the stuff back up. Since it’s both of them doing this, that’d be my guess. Theodore has done similar things in the past with his veggies when he eats them too fast (since then, counter-intuitively, I’ve found that the best thing for him is to feed him larger leaves, which he then eats a lot more slowly). He never spat anything out, but he certainly looked like he was about to.

Good on you for taking them to the vet anyway though.

I agree, it sounds like they’re eating too fast. I would do the scatter method with them to help slow them down. I’m glad that you’re taking them to the vet just in case. =]

I agree with the others, but I would have freaked out at the time too! And, like you, would have headed to the vet!

Just as a precaution, do you know how to do the bunny Heimlich maneuver?

They seem fine now, but I think I’m still going to try and get to the vet.

I’m a bit concerned about Teddy though he doesn’t seem quite himself. :/

The drooling/spitting definitely sounds like eating too fast. Liam eats like he’s never seen food before and never will ever again- I HAVE to hand feed him his veggies one at a time so that he doesn’t eat too fast and dribble chlorophyll-green drool everywhere- I’m scared he’ll choke one day. I also scatter pellets as much as possible in the pen, both to prevent choking on Liam’s part and to give Merida some glimmer of a chance to eat some before he vacuums it all up O_o

So, it turns out a Teddy has had a mild bout of stasis. -I swear, my bunnies are the stasis magnets!

Ironically it was unrelated to the whole spitting thing, but he got my attention, so it’s all worked out in the end.

Yesterday he was not wanting to eat and having really mucky poops, but we’ve given him a probiotic and lots of nice food options, and this morning he seems much brighter. Plenty of poops and a good appetite!

He’s also lost lots of weight, so lucky boy gets extra food until he fattens up!

Oh Tessie – I missed this completely! How does that happen??? But so happy to get the ‘good news and everything is ok now’ end of your thread. And goodness NO, we can’t have our big Teddy boy loosing weight! (he he he he….).
I know you’ve been busy – hoping everything is going well for you to Tessie? Take care – bunny cuddles to everyone.

What where they eating when this happened? Veggies or pellets?

                              LPT – pellets

You could also try making a pellet paste so they can’t gobble it down quickly. Completely unrelated (LOL), but my cat would eat too fast and then throw up. The vet said to get him the wet cat food that is like a paste (rather than chunks of meat). Then I had to mash it down on a plate so he would be forced to lick it up.

LOL LBJ, maybe they’re gonna end up like old age pensioner bunnies who can only eat mush!

Pellets caused problems for my Bindi too. He eats like a vacuum cleaner. I can’t imagine he even tastes his food. After a couple of very scary choking-like episodes (I suspect he got a pellet caught in his throat and it caused him to gag and drool for several minutes which was terrifying of rme), I now only give him pellets that have been soaked in a bit of warm water to fluff them up.

Oh, so maybe I really will have to treat him like an old man, haha!

                                        Hmmm
I’ll keep a close eye the next few days and see how we go
