So after work yesterday I went to give Nigel his much loved salad and he wouldn’t eat. Flash forward through a night of tummy massage, Ovol drops, pedialyte, water through a syringe and no sleep and Nigel is at currently at the vet’s. She confirmed he is in GI statis and is giving him pain meds, sub q fluids and something to help make if bowels start moving. (She is very rabbit savvy I got her name form the House Rabbit Society web page.) My question is this though if he hasn’t eaten or pooped since at least 6:00 last night and it is now 11:00am what are the chances he’ll actually come around? Should I be optimistic, at what point have things gone on too long?

I don’t think that was too long at all….any idea from the vet as to possible causes for the stasis?

No she doesn’t have one at this time. She said she is more concerned about getting things moving first and she thought we’d follow up with a work up once he started feeling better but didn’t want to stress him out more right now by taking blood or xrays. While I was at work yesterday the house cleaner was in ( as she is every month) and she vacuums near his carpet and he doesn’t like that. Plus my 21 year brought home a new electric guitar so maybe the noise of that stressed him out. I wouldn’t dare mention that to my son as a possibility though as he loves the rabbit and would be hart broken if he thought he harmed him inadvertently.

Talked to the vet and after three hours of fluids, pain meds and something to stimulate his bowels there has been no change. She has also started force feeding him critical care on the hour. He isn’t get worse but there has been no improvement. I found him at 6:30 last night but he was already swollen and uncomfortable by then so I would guess that he stopped eating some time late yesterday afternoon at the very latest. Which means that we are fast approaching 24 hours since he last ate or pooped. Realistically I have to consider a budget and I also hate to have him put through extensive test and the accompanying stress if at this point his chance of a positive outcome is small. At what point does his chance of recovery get small enough that additional treatment and testing is just prolonging his pain? The last thing I want to do is lose him but I have to be realistic about how much I can afford and how much he should suffer, especially as I suspect his chances of recovery are dropping by the hour. Id really appreciate any advice from anyone who’s been down this road.

              Thanks!

                How is your bunny today?

Hang in there. I’ve had bunnies go into really bad stasis and I was certain I was going to lose them. Bunnies can be real little fighters so don’t give up on him!

Bunnies are stronger than people think, and often they will pull through even when you don’t expect it.
