        Hi!

This is my first post and I’m hoping someone can help! I have a gorgeous lop eared bunny which we rescued from a friend of a friend. She’s approx 3yrs (previous owner can’t remember…) and been spayed. We’ve had her for 5 weeks now.

When we first got Hugo we started her on hay (she’d only been fed pellets before) and within a week she was chomping it down! We’d leave a bowl of hay and a hay rack and 80% would be gone by the morning. Now she won’t eat any hay at all. I’ve tried cutting down on pellets and greens – but she won’t eat at all. She’s also taken to biting and digging at me now – it’s only since she stopped eating hay. Her teeth seem ok – she’ll eat pellets, green grass and veg fine. It’s just hay she refuses!

She’s also taken to weeing on the floor sometimes, rather than in her litter tray – which is new.

        Do rabbits rebel!?

        Thanks,

        Sam and Hugo

Wipe the pee with papertowel, and put the towel in her litterbox. Also, make sure to througly clean the pee spots so she won’t go outside the box again.

Hey is VERY important in a rabbits diet and it is neccessary. It helps prevent blockages, and moves fur and other unsopposed to eated objects down her gut.

What type of hay are you feeding her? No alfalfa, it just makes rabbits’ fat. You can feed orchard, timothy, oat, and other grass hays. I bought a bale for my bunnies, but they much prefer when I buy individual bags of different kinds of hay and mix them together. Rabbits should eat AT LEAST their body size in hay each day..

Rabbits don’t necessarily rebel the way people do by refusing to eat their greens, as it were. That behavior you’re seeing coupled with the fact that she’s peeing around her living area is a sign that she’s become very territorial of her space. Make sure you never clean or enter her pen/enclosure while she’s inside unless you absolutely have to — or even when she can see you. Give her her space.

As for the hay, she may very well have simply become bored with it. You can try a new brand of hay, and/or, you can also try mixing in a different type of hay, like botanical hay or orchard grass hay. Just remember though, no alfalfa (as Mocha said), and no weird “hay with mix-ins” that you see at the pet store. Just plain, straight, grass hays.

              Thank you!

I’m feeding her Timothy Hay but have also tried Meadow Hay (she hates this and tips her bowl on the floor straight away!).

Will try keeping her away from her pen when I clean her. At the moment she just hops around the living room while I clean her out, but inevitably hops around my feet and on the dust pan! Will try keeping her in the other room when I’m cleaning her out incase that’s what’s upsetting her.

              Fingers crossed!
