Hello I’ve been reading that bunnies love to shred newspaper and phone books. I’m looking to let her play some but I’ve been reluctant well because Flopsie is a monster ???

She eats everything. I have cardboard boxes for her to chew and if I don’t monitor she’ll bite and consume a bit. I was concerned that if I left a phone book in she might consume a lot of it. I know that someone mentioned soy ink used and that is more safe?

Flopsie is adorable, by the way.

Yes, newspapers and phonebooks are 100% safe. All major newspapers use non-toxic soy ink, which is entirely safe for bunnies, and I know Yellowbook specifically uses the same safe dye. The one thing you don’t want to give her are those shiny inserts you see in the newspapers, usually used for adverts. The ink in those is chemical-based and not safe.

Haha thanks! She can be cute but she’s a monster; but she’s my monster haha

Thanks for the info. Should I remove the cover of the phone book too? Since it is a bit thinker and glossy?

I would definitely take it off, just to be on the safe side. c:

Phone books and such are very fun for lilac, and she can be a bit destructive. So I usually take the covers and siding off of the phone book and take out a nice chunkof the actual phone book (usualy the size of my palm thickness or a little more) she likes to shred it and dig in it, but ive also found her peeing on it before, too :p. I find that if I give it to her in chunks it seems to last a little longer.

okay, i got a phone book, stripped the cover and the glossy inserts and plopped it in front of my meatball and she just looked at it and started to eat it -_______-

so do I need to do anything to get the process started? should I tear up a ibit of the pages or fan it out a bit?

                    Hahahahaha of course.
You may want to consider shredding it a little or even a lot – maybe to the point where you can put the scraps into a box to making a digging box?

Theodore doesn’t really chew paper too much. The closest he ever got was pulling a Peter Rabbit book off the shelf (yes, it was adorable).

                    Maybe Flabebe has more suggestions?

If she seems to be eating a ton, this could be cause for concern, but a small-medium size amount of paper/cardboard is safe for bunny tummies.
What I usually do is open the phone book up to the middle, then hide some treats in the pages. Should encourage them to play, ha ha ha.

Encouraging them to play is probably the hardest part! I have tried so many different digging boxes and I find that if you tear at the phone book (and newspaper) in a certain direction it tears fairly straight. I usually take a few layers and tear them, then she will dig at it. Shes also eaten some, but not much. I have caught my bun tear out pages and not eat them, too.
