Ugh, so there’s a tummy bug thats been going around my place of work. Loads of people have had it and I’ve been covering shifts left and right while people were unwell. Today it finally got me, I was having my afternoon nap (i work nights so i try to get a few hours in the day) and woke up just ‘…nope’ spent the evening whimpering and holding my tummy and retching.

I called up my collegues, saying i felt awful, they said rest up, they could cope without me, etc, feel better soon! This was about two hours before my shift started. Bear in mind, if they couldn’t have coped I would have gone in and made it work….somehow…. and I said that. Anyway, they agreed to do my time, and I just had to text my boss and say sorry, cant do tonight but don’t worry, people said they’d cover for me, explained that i was ill.

And got a reply of abuse! Lots of being shouted at, it was unacceptable to call in two hours before shift, lots of swearing etc…. Now, I know its not good to call in so short notice, its not good etiquette but its not as if you can schedule these things?! And everyone who’d actually be working tonight – the boss doesn’t work, she oversees and does day deliveries and paperwork – said the shift would be fine.

I hate confrontation. Feel lousy, both for my tummy and from my boss!

edit – if it was just a cold or sniffles i would have gone in, but i am HURLING MY LUNGS UP.

Maybe a dumb question, but when you’ve been covering for everyone else who has had the bug, and everyone has been in and out, why does the boss not go in a lend a hand? Where I work, the managers do more than supervise, we’re the extra pair of hands too!

Ugh I’ve no idea, it seems like the sensible thing right?

That’s horrible Silverpaws! You would think your boss would understand/be more compassionate!
              Get better soon!

What does your manager want, for you to go in puke on everyone and make it so there is no one left uninfected to continue working. No sane person wants you coming to work with a stomach bug, your manager is crazy.

                Stay hydrated and rest.

Ginger Ale (Type of soda) and popcicles might help your tummy a bit if you want to try to eat something. Like Eepster said, stay hydrated and rest.

Uhm. I would call the person over the manager, personally, if the manager tries to give you a hard time over this. If you are ill and contagious, especially if you work with the public, most companies have a policy that require you to be allowed to call in sick. Even the company I worked for that wanted me to work 7 days a week and cancel all my days off yelled at the manager when she told me I couldn’t call in sick.

How is 2 hours short notice? At my retail job, people would just not show up. The manager would call them and find out that they are sick. Now that’s short notice, informing them after you failed to show up for your shift! They would be so appreciative if someone gave them a whole 2 hours to find someone to cover.
