Every summer, no matter how clean I keep Pepe’s cage, he ALWAYS attracts flies. Not just two or three flies, there are at least twenty flies on my ceiling above his cage right now. Even if I clean his cage everyday, as soon as he poops or pees, the flies gather. I’ve tried all types of different bedding/litter, I keep all of my windows shut, but they always manage to get in as soon as I open my door. My apartment is clean, and I am getting so sick of these flies. They’re annoying and ugly and unsanitary. I go at them like a mad woman every few hours with my fly swatter, and although I kill many, they just spawn out of nowhere an hour later. This has happened every summer since I’ve had him. They aren’t attracted to him exactly, just his poops and pees. To top it all off, my boyfriend and I are moving in with his parents until we can afford to buy a house, and I do not want to bring flies there. I’m terrified of having the same problem there, and I will do anything to prevent it from happening.
These flies have got to go. Although I love my rabbit very much, I’ve considered finding him a new home a few times, but my boyfriend has a very close bond with him, and re-homing him is not an option. (even though he never looks after him, I do -_-) but seriously, I am having nightmares about flies. ugh.
        Anybody else have this issue?

I had this issue with moths. I used a natural pest killer that got rid of them like nothing else would. It was called ecosmart organic pest killer (make sure it says it is safe for kids and pets, that is the one I used). I sprayed it right on any moth I saw and within 1 week- BAM no more moths!

I had tried other pest control things and even squishing them but nothing worked as good as this spray did. I can not say for sure that it will fix your problem, but it has killed every bug in my house since I got the spray and it kills them quickly and no matter what type.

The good news is the move will probably solve the fly problem….. I had a similar situation, the house was full of flies last Summer. I eventually resolved the problem with Mortein Naturgard (indoor) in the automatic spray… I positioned it in the kitchen away from the bunnies… It took a few weeks but it eventually nailed every one of the nasty little blighters. They were coming in from outside, specifically from my neighbours yard where she left her dogs poop for months on end till it was ankle deep all over… The stink was bad enough but the flies were shocking. You are going to need to be diligent about keeping doors and unscreened windows closed… They also come in through the cat flap.. They will be seeking the moisture as much as the poop… Some sticky traps on the windows will also catch some of them. You can buy pretty ones that look like flowers…. Rest assured, the flies will not follow… Break every thing down for the move and wash it well. Dispose of any old hay and buy new stuff…

Do you know what type of flies they are?

It sounds like they might be getting in somewhere you haven’t discovered yet.
If that’s the case, you shouldn’t have the fly issue when you move.

Have you tried fly traps or fly tape? That would at least keep them away from Pepe.
If you can determine what type if flies they are, you’ll be better able to bait some traps.
Someone once posted about sticking a piece of bread on a strip of fly tape and had success.

Edit to add: what do you use to clean his cage? Some things might actually be an attractant.
What is his poop like? Mostly dry round balls or does he leave a lot of cecal poop around?

Lol. We all posted at a similar time. I hadn’t read the other responses. Sorry to repeat what was already said.

My landlord upstairs, (I live in a basement apartment) always leaves the back door open. And there’s a pool here so the yard attracts bugs like crazy. We also have ants, earwigs, spiders, and all kinds of weird insects that I’ve never seen in my life. I’ve mentioned to her about closing the doors but she’s old and forgetful. Also the a/c is broken so all of the windows are open upstairs as well. The flies are mostly black flies, and poop flies.
Awhile ago my landlords cat brought in a baby bunny and let it go in the house and it got under the dishwasher, which is right over my apartment. I think the bunny may have gotten into the floor and died. Because the flies literally just spawn from nowhere, like I said. I’ll kill most of them before bed and wake up to tons on my ceiling. I haven’t seen maggots down here, or in Pepe’s cage. But my landlord has found maggots on the floor upstairs.
I cannot wait to move. So gross.
Thank you for the advice everything! I considered getting fly tape but it looks so gross just hanging there. Maybe I’ll put it where no one can really see it.

You could try the decals or an electric bug zapper. If the back door is left open though they will just keep coming inside. There are several bunny safe herbs that repel insects… Basil, Mint and Lavender… You could try hanging bundles in the areas where they gather and strewing some on the floor across door ways where you walk on them and release the oils.. Dry some and mix it in with your bunnies hay or put some fresh about and around the litter trays. Suggest to your landlord she plants a lavender bush near the door she leaves open as it might stop some of the flies.

We spend alot of time on our patio in the evening when the weather is nice. Our next door neighbor has 5 dogs and doesn’t clean up the yard very often. They also don’t clean out their gutters (there are small trees growing in them!). So, while our privacy fence helps with the dog poop smell, we still end up with tons of flies and mosquitos. We use an electric bug zapper out there. It’s not very pretty to look at, but it does attract the bugs. If all else fails, (I think Roberta mentioned it), it’s worth a try.

It doesn’t sound like you’re doing anything wrong, it’s just the outside environment and probably the time of year. Hopefully some of these solutions work for you.

Consider using Novartis RearGuard or US equivalent if controlling the flies is impossible. It will put your rabbit at less risk of fly strike while you’re still there.
