Cinnabun has been taking antibiotics for a few days now, but his appetite is slowing (not gone) and his tummy feels strange. I would like to get him started on some probiotics. It is a little late tonight, but I think I have some pure acidophilus some where. Does this work on rabbits? If so, how much do I give?

What other things would you recommend? I have seen yogurt recommended but also seen others who say don’t give any yogurt. Which is correct?

Also, he is currently on papaya tablets (link below). Will this help? If so, should I increase his dosage?

        Thanks!

I don’t know much about that to give any advice, but if he is losing his appetite alfalfa will usually make them eat. Honestly the extra calories would probably be good since he isn’t feeling well, and it would keep his tummy in check.
I hope he starts to feel better soon.

I am not sure about the probiotics. But I just dealt with this problem with my rabbit. She was on medication for what they though was urinary problems. She refused to eat hay but would eat veggies and treats and her liquid intake went down to zero. I gave her pure pine juice (diluted. The sugar in the fruit can cause a problem so only give them a little but the enzymes in the fruit help with digestion) and lots of leafy green. Tummy massages always help too. Just circular motions up and down their abdomen. That should help with their tummy. It helps keep their system moving along. My rabbit was constipated and gassy, a day to a day and a half of this and she was good as new. Hope it helps!

Ditsysmama- Fast or slow motions on the massages? I assume slow, but just want to check

My other problem is that his brother is eating anything I try to get him to eat. I just went to feed him treats and he has now started to refuse treats and looks like he is in more pain now (he looked better before I gave him his last dose of antibiotic and now is looking more sick). There aren’t too many rabbit vets in my area and it is late at night where I live, so everything is closed. I will keep trying to get him to eat and if he doesn’t I’ll force feed him, but honestly I am pretty scared right now. He isn’t looking so good, yet looked almost normal five hours ago.

                Slow with a little pressure.
My rabbit within a couple of hours just completely changed and stopped eating. It happens so quick. You probably will have to force him to eat and drink unfortunately. Is he still pooping and urinating?

Ditsysmama- It is hard to tell, since his brother is kept with him. Cinnabun is eating very small amounts. Should I still force feed him? I worry that that will tramatize him to the point where he stops eating and such completely.

When I have given antibiotics to my rabbits, I give them Bene-Bac Plus. I think that you can only get it from a vet, but there are other probiotics sold in pet supply stores.

Can you separate Cinnabun from his brother and offer him any of the veggies and fruits that he really likes? You didn’t say if you had Critical Care on hand, but I assume that’s what you are talking about force feeding him. You can also try mixing some of that in a container and see if he will eat it on his own, instead of force feeding him. I have even added a spoonful of (organic) baby food to the mix to make it more enticing. I used apple and carrot baby foods.

The Papaya tablets are probably more of a treat than anything, but it’s good for him to have food moving through him, so you can continue with those. The label says one or two a day.

I hope that Cinnabun will feel better and start eating well soon.

You can buy benebac from amazon and other websites, not just the vet.

Update- Cinnabun is improving, but still not eating as much as he used to. The vet stopped the antibiotics as he thinks Cinnabun had been on them long enough to work if they were going to work.

Tobyluv- Is it ok to separate them? They are very bonded and Cinnabun is very clingy to his brother (he won’t do anything unless George does it first and always tries to stick right next to him anytime anything scary is going on, like syringe feedings and antibiotics!). I worry that separating them will cause even more stress and depression for the bunnies.

Since your other bunny, George, is eating the veggies that you want Cinnabun to eat, I just thought that you could separate them long enough to get Cinnabun to eat a good quantity. I certainly didn’t mean for them to be separated at other times. Definitely keep them together, especially since George obviously comforts Cinnabun. Since Cinnabun may not eat the veggies unless he sees George eating them, maybe you could just separate them with your body – have George on one side with some veggies, and Cinnabun on the other side of you, hopefully also wanting to eat his veggies.

I’m glad that Cinnabun is better. Hopefully, with the antibiotics out of his system, he will start eating better on his own. Keep tempting him with his favorites and maybe you could even try a veggie from the approved list that he’s never had before. Something different may stimulate his appetite. Just give a small quantity if it’s something he’s never had before.

Tobyluv- thanks for the advice- I’ll try it. Not sure if he’ll figure out a new veggie is food, but I’ll try it (they still can’t seem to understand that carrots are food. Very strange. Bunnies who don’t eat carrots)
