Its moulting season in our house, and I decided to groom Merlin. He happily let me brush away eating hay and purring, and two massive balls of fluff later I realised – he has a bald spot?! A sizable one, bigger than a two penny piece. Its right down to the skin, all through the white fur. He’s not in any pain, and doesn’t react if i stroke or touch it. In fact, he’s still moulting! If i stroke him he still fluffs all over my hand, but as you can imagine I’m a little worried about brushing him in case he gets even balder!

        Whats going on???

I freaked out when I found a couple of bald spots on Marlee this Spring — my first thought was mites. The next day I got a magnifying glass and took pics. Then I found very short fur growing in. Searched the web too. Normal molt.

As long as the skin looks normal and no flaking, its likely normal molt. Take a look on the web and you’ll see some scaring looking molting bunnies! Seems some bunnies blow entire sections of their coats all at once.

I took Porky to the vet over thinning fur around his shoulders about a year ago. The vet declared it harmless, and he’s been fine since though a bit less fuzzy on his shoulders than when he was younger. Even though it turned out OK, I’m glad I took him to the vet instead of worrying over it.

I know the feeling Eepster. I took Marlee to the vet to verify molting. I also took my dog to the vet *twice* over the same fat pads (vet call them saddlebags and love handles!) — did biopsies and bloodwork too . . . over a little chub! My most recent trip was over basil downy mildew with all three buns!

I think you need a horticulturalist not a vet for downy mildew.

Both my buns often get bald spots during molting. As long as you are not over grooming and the skin is not red, irritated or dry, it’s nothing to worry about. The fur will grow back.

Thanks guys, nope the skin is dark and some hair is beginning to grow back. Poor Merlin is looking very peculiar at the moment, half in and half out of his old coat!
