So, we took in a 5-ish month old male bunny called Barry today. His previous human, a colleague, has to move house and cannot take him with her. Anita’s (my girlfriend) parents have an 8 year old male house bunny called Bundle who needs a friend, so the plan is to take Barry to the vet to get him neutered and then a month or so after, introduce him to Bundle. Hopefully they will get on, but we’re experienced in bonding (some of you may recall my posts about Ariel and Miranda, our two Lionhead siblings) so we’re confident we will be able to get them to live together as chums.

The funny thing about Barry is that he was described as “skittish” and quiet. We set up his new quarters in our spare room:

Within minutes of creeping cautiously out of his carry-case he was busy exploring and munching pellets and hay. We left him alone for 4 hours or so, before going to sit with him for a couple of hours to keep him company. I don’t think I’ve seen a bunny eat so much! He’d come over to see us, then scamper back to munch on more hay. He readily accepted pellet treats from our hands and nose-rubs and even tooth-purred with his head down. He’s a very active and inquisitive little chap and will probably be quite a handful!

We are a little worried that he is under weight; you can feel his spine and hip bones, but I’m sure given the amount he’s eating, he’ll be fine. Our bunnies are 5 years old, so we might have forgotten what young bunnies are like!

Anyway, we’re really happy we were able to help him out and give him the life he deserves. Enough talk; here are the all important pictures:

He’s beautiful! What a lucky bun!
          Skittish? I think not!
I love you litter box set up.

He is a cutie! Glad you were able to take him in and have found him a suitable home, I hope the bonding goes well.

Ah, thanks both. I appreciate you deleting the other post.

He’s really settling in. We’ve had 4 binkies so far, and he loves to be stroked. He’s constantly eating hay too! You’d think he’d never eaten, so I do wonder is he wasn’t being feed enough and that’s why he’s a little under weight. Or maybe he’s just super greedy!

Ah, thanks! (on his behalf). We’re getting a thorough lesson in Bunny proofing from this little chap. This morning he was sat outside his pen, waiting for his breakfast. No idea how he got out – the pen is 2ft tall, though we’ve already witnessed what a magnificent leap he has. Could be a small gap, which we didn’t think he’d get through. He’s got so much energy and you can just see the cogs whirring in his brain as he’s scampering about his pen looking for food.

Here’s a better picture I managed to get of him today (which perfectly illustrates what I just said!)

                      Cute bunny!

Sounds like a jumper! My little 3.4 lb bun can clear a baby gate with no problem, and brave enough to jump it even though its opaque. Borrowed from another BBer, but we are now referring to her as Kieko Knievel . . !

He looks like he needs some fattening up

Then again, I just love feeding rabbits

                        He is VERY adorable

We weighed him on Monday; he’s 1.6 kilos (3.5 lbs) at the moment, so not alarmingly thin, I guess. The way he’s eating I’m sure he’ll bulk out a bit, though we’ll weigh him each week to make sure there’s nothing sinister going on that might need veterinary intervention. We’ve got to schedule him in to be neutered soon anyway, so the vet will be able to get a good look at him before hand.

I’ve had to cover his pen with a white sheet today as he’s managed to escape about 5 times now. That, in itself, isn’t so much of a problem, but being an X-pen of sorts, I worry that he could get a leg caught and do himself an injury.

When they’re lightweights, they seem to be able to escape pens easily. One of mine would climb out of his when he was young. Once they get bottom heavy, they’re less sucessful with escapes. Lol
