I have had my bunny for two years and he hasnt had any issues. Just recently he has begun to make a strange noise that i dont know quite how to describe. It is some sort of a squeaking or grunting. Lucky has been acting perfectly normal around other bunnies and people, though he has always been a little cranky and we havent made any big changes in his diet or excercise. The noise is starting to worry me and I’m not sure if i should take him to the vet or not. He has been neutered, so i dont think it has to do with mating. Should I be concerned?

        Thanks

I think you need to go by the rest of his behavior to know what it’s about. A bunny will grunt, sounding like hmm, hmm, hmm, and that’s a quiet noise called “honking”, which is a sign of affection or pleasure. My bunny might honk when she sees someone approach her with a treat, for example. I
f he is hunched down and doesn’t want to move, but is in a meatloaf position, and makes this noise, he may be ill. If he isn’t eating, or is having trouble pooping, he may be ill. So, look for any signs of discomfort or illness, and take him to the vet if his behavior is off.
Otherwise, he might just be content and happy!

He has also been drinking a lot of water recently, which he has never done before. I’m worried that he might be ill, though he doesn’t seem uncomfortable at all. I don’t think he is making the noise because he is happy because he is a rather I’ll tempered rabbit. The noise is starting to sound like he may be having trouble breathing, which worries me.

            Thanks for the help!

Then I would take him in for a vet visit.
You know your bunny best, and if he seems a little ‘off ‘ to you, it is always a good idea to get him checked out.

I concur with LongEaredLions, if you think your bunny’s behavior is off, a vet visit is not a bad idea. Especially if you notice any changes in bathroom habits, diet habits, lethargy, or any signs of discomfort. Drinking a lot of water could be a sign of something off, but maybe he’s just dehydrated or too hot!

I’m wondering if it is just honking, though, as RabbitPam suggested. Does it sound anything like this or this? (Those are YouTube links.) Theodore honks when he’s enjoying some leafy greens or a nice grooming session, or sometimes when I scratch him on his head. Honking is a very soft, gentle noise that is usually almost inaudible. If it’s a very loud noise you’re hearing, I’d say a vet visit is definitely in order. c:

My bunny makes honking noises all the time when he’s happy or excited like when I give him attention or when I feed him. Right now he is out playing and whenever I go near him he makes the little noises. I think they are really cute!

I remember the rabbits I had when I was a kid used to make similar noises, but I know they were actually “growling” because they would lunge at me. They weren’t very tame…they were outside rabbits and since I was a kid I know I was a little too rough with them.

Like the others said, if he is acting weird and seems like his breathing is off then I agree you should keep an eye on him and take him to the vet if necessary.

it sounds a little like that so I’m not so worried about the honking anymore so much as the fact that he is drinking an insane amount of water. He seems to be eating fine and we keep him in a temperature controlled room, so i don’t think he would be dehydrated but who knows? He’s due for a vet visit soon anyways.

Never a bad idea! Good luck!

Vet visit sounds good-let us know how it goes. It might be worth taking a video of the noises so your vet can see what you mean when you bring him in. Good for you for noticing those small changes! It’s not always easy!
