Is it possible for a rabbit to be allergic or have allergies towards hay? Every time I put fresh hay in Sage’s cage, he sneezes.

It may be that the hay is too dusty. Could you try hay from a different source?
Also, I make up “go to” boxes of hay. When I take a handful of the hay from my big box, I give it a good shake before it goes in my go to box. Most of the hay I’ve gotten has been pretty good, but I have gotten some that was pretty dusty.

I don’t think rabbits can be allergic to hay. Like JR said, it is likely just the dust from the hay. You can buy “dust extracted” hay, or you can give it a good shake before feeding.

Dust extracted hay? Where do you get that LEL?

I don’t buy it myself as the hay I buy is usually surprisingly dust free, but I know several different brands make “dust extracted hay. I have seen it in pet stores/feed stores, but I don’t know if you can buy it in bulk.

I hadn’t heard of dust extracted hay. Learned something new!

I buy fresh hay from a farm-they sell it for livestock but it’s lovely and green.

I’m going to have to nose around a bit and see what some of the horse people around here are feeding their horses. Problem is that most of the horse people are celebrities and very private people. If I happened to run into one of them at the grocery store, I’d probably be flattened by some undercover inconspicuous body guard who thought I was some crazy person when I rushed over asking “Where’d ya get your horse hay????” (especially if I wore fuzzy slippers to the store like another BBer who shall not be named!)

Edit: Somehow I don’t think preceding it with “Excuse me, you don’t know me but I have pet bunnies .. .” would help ….!

I can’t afford the compressed / dust free hays in quantity for my two, but since Stickers has been having her sneezing issues I shake out their hay really well to get all that dust that collects at the bottom out before I give it to them. You can take it outside and give it a good beating on a tarp or blanket too.

What all harm can hay dust do to our bunny friends ? Is is capable of causing some serious illnesses ?

As long as it’s just hay dust and not mold then I don’t think it would do anymore than make then (and possibly you) sneeze. I’d still shake it off — who wants to sneeze while they’re eating?!

Its been raining alot here lately si I made up my weekly “go to” hay boxes on the kitchen floor last night (spread out a big piece of plastic). When I wiped my kitchen counter off, it had fine green hay dust on it from shaking the hay!

So glad I happened along this thread! Moxie’s been sneezing when I give her hay too. It never clicked that it could be because the hay could be dusty!
I’ll be giving the hay a good shake before I give it to her, and tell you what happens!

Lola has been having sneezing and runny nose problems since the beginning of summer too. I had read about hay dust so I wasn’t too worried but mentioned it to the vet last week when I took them in for a check up. He said it was probably just dust from the hay or the litter and recommended misting the hay very lightly with water when I fill the hay bin and litter box. Any one ever try this?

Last night I gave the hay a REALLY good shake. She only sneezed like 3 times when I put it in, after that she was all good. I might try the misting technique.
