I found a giant pink callus/bald spots on one of my bun’s feet. I don’t understand how he got them. His cage is completely carpeted and has three fleece beds. He’s not overweight (He’s actually a little too skinny). He’s stopped standing up on his hind legs, so it must be hurting him. But I don’t know what to do for his little feet. Can this develop into sore hocks even though he’s on a soft surface?

How long are your little one’s nails? If they get too long they can cause sore hocks issues. If you’re worried you can get little memory foam pads or just make a super squishy pad out of material for him to lay on that will give him a super soft area to lounge on. These little spots can develop into sore hocks so just giving him an area that’s soft and squishy to lay will help with the healing. There are some members here who have dealt with buns with sore hocks. I believe that they put an ointment of some sort to help along the healing process.

Yeah for sure-even in perfect conditions, some rabbits are just prone to them. Rex rabbits seem to be able to get them no matter what. My rabbit has a foot disfigurement and has a low level one all the time, but it doesn’t develop into an open sore, so I just keep an eye.
You can definitely add pads like BunnyBrigade mentioned-soft pads will work.

I think bag balm is ok to put on sore hocks, but I haven’t done it. Also prep-H (the hemorrhoid cream) is good to put on them.

Pink, hard callouses are normal. Most bunnies have them. It’s important to check them at least once a week for signs of sore hocks which include redness, swelling, cracking and/or bleeding. Keeping the nails short will help them from progressing.

Thank you for the replies! It’s reassuring to know that it won’t necessarily become real sore hocks. Because while the he doesn’t have sores of any kind, he also doesn’t have any fur on the back of his feet anymore.

His nails tend to be on the long end of acceptable (he tends to bite the hand that clips him) and he’s a Spot/MiniRex mix. I’ll start keeping his nails as short as possible, put foam pads in his favorite napping places, and try the cream. Is it safe for them to ingest or do I need to keep them from grooming it?

I probably wouldn’t bother with cream unless there is redness. I had a Mini-Rex who had pink callouses for years and they never progressed.
