I tried searching for other topics like this and didn’t see anything, so I apologize if this has been answered before! I try to clean Gizmo’s cage every 3 to 4 days and I have always used a pet safe cleaning solution that we order online. I was thinking last night that I could probably make my own and save a bit of money. Anyone make their own cleaning solutions? I would prefer something that doesn’t leave a heavy scent as I suffer from frequent headaches, but I am willing to try it if it will save me some money

        Thanks!

I just use vinegar and water.

Same here. I mix white vinegar and water 50/50 and use it for everything from cleaning cages and litterboxes to quick removal of stains on fleece. (I use Nature’s Miracle laundry booster when washing fleece in the washing machine).

Edit: White vinegar can even be used to sanitize bottles.

Awesome! I think we actually did that many years ago but then we just got lazy and started buying some cleaner, lol. I will try and get some mixed up today, thank you!

adding baking soda to the vinegar and water helps with the smell too

I work at a nature center and clean raptors’ (owls, hawks, falcons) cages with either a mixture of alcohol and water or vinegar. I don’t know if an alcohol and water mixture is safe for rabbits, but like other people said, vinegar works nicely. The raptors can make a big mess when they eat their meat. If vinegar can clean that then it would surely work for rabbit messes.

I also bought a “pet safe” cleaning solution, but am going to try vinegar next when that runs out.

If you decide to put it in a spray bottle, make sure to get one that is chemical resistant. Vinegar is acidic and non-chemical resistant spray bottles will stop working within a few weeks. I went through two and finally looked on line . . .!

Really JR? My spray bottle is from the dollar section at target and has been in service for almost a year! :/

Vinegar is a miracle cleaner! I use it for all my bunny cleaning as well as for floors, sinks, etc. I don’t buy heavy chemical cleaners and I never use anything that is tested on animals so vinegar to the rescue!

LEL — doesn’t have to be expensive to be chemical resistant. I bought a six-pack of chemical resistant spray bottles for $5.86 at Sams Club last night. (hubby wanted some extras for other things!)

Good to know about the bottle! I’ll have to check the spray bottle I have. I believe its a bottle we bought for gardening. Thanks for all the tips!
