I know sometimes you see a bunny and a name just randomly comes to mind and it fits. Other times there’s a reason behind it. 3 of our bunnies were named before we even got them (as in, ever met them) Bruno, Biscuit and Obie. I liked the guy on Dancing with the Stars named Bruno tonioli and thought Bruno would be a cute bunny name. So I told the hubs, our first bunnyv will be Bruno, regardless of sex. For biscuit, I was making sausage gravy one night and it hit me Biscuit would be a cute name. So our next bun was Biscuit. After we saw Obie for adoption, we had the “can we save him” discussion. That’s when I named him. For the others, Roxie is a rex so we started off with Rexanne, but Roxanne is what stuck. With Caesar, we wanted to avoid common “white animal names” but still wanted it to be a white name. So it was Caesar for the salad dressing. With Harley, my husband named him. He orginally thought he had harlequin markings ( which we reallised later he doesn’t) so he name him Harley Quinn. As for Hazel, with seven buns we had to have at least one Watership Down name lol.

How did your bunny get its name?

          Fun thread!

We thought Luna was a boy when she was a baby (even the vet said she was a boy!) so she was Albus. Not necessarily because of Harry Potter but because I liked the name.
When we went to get ‘him’ neutered they realised she was a girl, so then we needed a new name. To be honest there were no names we particularly liked, but Luna stuck! Partly because it’s a Harry Potter name so it seemed to fit.
If I could go back and do it again I’d choose a different name for her because I’m not super fond of Luna and it’s a pretty common pet name now. But we call her Loony or Loony Tunes most of the time anyway!

Paddington, I’m not sure, the name just came to me, and I loved loved loved that name and still do. It’s a shame we didn’t get to use it for long.

For Theodore I wanted to be able to call him Teddy bear!

Nutmeg was already named when we got her from previous owners. We liked the name so we didn’t change it.

Since Nutmeg is a spice, we decided to stick to spice names so that’s where we came up with Sage’s name.

If we ever get another bunny it will also have a spice name.

Okay, so before i got Moxie,(i had already met the litter) I had decided i was going to name her Amaryllis. Then I was like “no that won’t work.” I was choosing between Cinder, Lilac, and another name that I can’t remember right now. Moxie was named lilac officially for about 5 minutes, and then it was DEFINATELY going to be Cinder. Wrong. She was named Cinder for about an hour. Finally I named her a name that wasn’t even on my HUGE list, and it stuck. Moxie.

With Bam, it came kind of naturally. Extremely charming, black, with big, beautiful ears. I know president Obama is only popular with about half of the US population, but you can’t deny he’s a bona (in this case bunna)fide celebrity. He is popular in Sweden. I don’t like our own Prime Minister a lot but I wouldn’t hold that against a bunny named Reinfeldt (there are probably very few bunnies named Reinfeldt though) so I hope you don’t hold Bam’s name against him. He’s only ever called Bam.

Yohio got the name Yohio because he’s a Japanese Harlequin (with very faint markings and nothing like a show-Japanese Harlequin should be, they look like bumble-bees). Yohio is a Swedish artist who is (or was) big in Japan when he used to dress up as an extremely pretty, blond anime girl.

Kieko is technically my son’s bunny and she was orininally JackJack when he thought “she” was a “he”, then my son and his ex-girlfriend looked through bunny name lists and chose Kieko.

I had chosen the name Marley before I got a bunny. When I went to meet a bunny I found online, I ended up getting two. They were originally going to be Marley and Peaches, but my son wanted to name our new boy bun since Kieko turned out to be a girl, so he chose the name Moshi (actually he chose Mochi and then Mushy and we nudged him toward Moshi). That left me with an unused “Marley” so my girl bun became Marlee. Marley (after the dog in the movie) actually would have fit Moshi perfectly!

                    Awesome thread!!
I have really enjoyed your name stories. Here is mine:

Like Brunosmama said, I also named my buns before I had even seen them. I am a bit of a geek and I like to surround myself with stuff that I like, game, films, music, anime, cartoons etc. So my pets are all named after things/people/characters.
Neji is named after the character in Naruto.
My fav pc game is a rpg called To The Moon and I thought I have to name my next bun after this game! I was thinking about a little black boy bunny called Moon, however, If I wanted to bond the new bunny with my male Neji then it would have to be a little white girl called Luna!

Same as my hamster, his name is Zim after the cartoon/character Invader Zim. I have even named my son after the singer in a band Modest Mouse.

I am also planning to get a third bunny, I want to name him Lupin III after Hiyao Miyazaki’s Castle of Cagliostro but my husband wants to call him Midna after the Zelda character! (I know midna is a girl but I think the name would suit a boy).

Nutlilly: Nutmeg and Sage are gorgeous names!!

My husband had Leopold picked out before we even got a rabbit. He got the name from South Park (Butters’ real name). So when we got Leopold, I knew that was going to have to be his name. I think it’s a cute name though for a bunny.
Wooly kind of came with his name. The people who had him were calling him Mr. Wooly. My husband didn’t like that name. He said his name should be Sweaters McWoolington. Adorable and creative, but kind of long. So I said that would be his “official name”, but we would call him Mr. Wooly (or just Wooly) for short.

My partner and I are HUGE “Suits” fans, so when we were talking about getting a bun I mentioned that Harvey Specter would be a good name. A few weeks later I saw a post on the Flemish Giant facebook page advertising a boy who was the last of his litter, and it just seemed to fit

I’m not a fan of “pet” names, so as a general rule I tend to give human names. However, I do like naming pets after TV or comic characters, so there may be a Lady Sif in our future….

I too had Henry picked out (for a girl or boy) before he was chosen and bought home. I like ‘classic’ human names for pets – I sorta think it sounds cool! LOL!

If your up for it (interested??? – ha ha ha….) I’ll share a funny story with you guys relating to Henry and his name.
Having chosen Henry’s name, instead of saying ‘the bunny’, we started saying ‘Henry…..’ and as the date got closer and closer, I excitedly kept saying to Blair (HUGE Wiggle’s fan) “Henry is coming home soon”! I thought it was a bit strange that he seemed to understand and got excited???
So, the day came and after Henry was placed in my arms I called out to Blair, ‘hurry, come quick and meet Henry’! He came running into the room and took one look at Henry with nothing but utter despair on his face, and literally turned and walked away??? HUH? Then it clicked! He must have thought we were bringing home Henry the OCTOPUS (Wiggle’s character), ha ha ha ha ha ha!
To this day, I’m sure I can still see the look of disappointment in his eyes every time he looks at Henry and see’s a rabbit!

                            LOL!

Theodore came with his name from the rescue where I adopted him, but since we liked the name so much, we just kept it! His “full name”, though, is Mr. Theodore Hatch. The “hatch” part is kind of a weird story. I built a new rooftop hatch for our apartment since the other one was way too heavy to move and thus rendered the rooftop basically useless. But I incorrectly measured one side, and then the hatch ended up being just barely too small. It still works, but it sits on top of the frame that it’s supposed to go over. x{ But it still works and now we go up to the roof all the time, so hey!

But one night I was feeling really upset with myself for making such a silly mistake, and I was being hard on myself. So my boyfriend drew a little rabbit on a piece of cardboard to cheer me up (this was right before I was going to adopt a bunny). So then I decided that “Hatch” would be a good name for a rabbit!

                              Once I met and fell in love with Theodore, though, we loved the name too much to change it and it suited him so well, so we made Hatch his surname, heheh. Plus, “Teddy Hatch” has a nice ring to it. I also call him Theodore Roosevelt from time to time, simply because I can. c;

My rabbit Bobby came with that name – I would have named him Mr. Mouse but in the end Bobby Bunny does suit him.

Just after I met my husband we went to visit my parents for the fourth of July. They took us to the park for a day of picnic and fun. You can drive around and look at buffalo and prairie dogs and some other wildlife. We were driving around and got out to look at a scenic overlook and sat on a bench to wait for everyone to be ready to go. My mom started laughing and told us to smile for the camera. Someone had carved “Tiny <3 Lola" in the bench behind us. Josh starts to laugh and says "I wonder which one of us is Lola?" I am 5'2", he is 6'. So I started calling him Lola and he called me Tiny. When we got our first dog, she was the runt of a litter of 12 and they had been calling her Teeny. So we decided she should be Tiny.

When we got Hobie it was just the beginning of hockey season (we even went to an out of town game in the town we got Hobie in the night before we picked him up). We love to watch our local college hockey team. When we first started dating he had never seen a college game and wasn’t a big fan of the sport in general. I told him he had to either learn to tolerate hockey or he would be spending Fri and Sat nights alone 6 months out of the year. Then I took him to a game and a hockey monster was born! In college hockey they have an award they give out to the most outstanding player called the Hobey Baker Award. It is named after an Air Force pilot that was an exceptional hockey and football player. Since hubs is in the Air Force it just seemed fitting that the puppy should be Hobie Baker!

Strawberry came with his name. We talked about changing it but it really kind of fit him and the more I said it out loud the more it grew on me. We do call him Berry for short sometimes.

edit to add: My teenage step children have taken to calling me short stack.  I have yet to find an appropriate name for them since they are both 6′ or taller (yes that’s right…the 14 yr old is more than a foot taller than I am). Any suggestions are welcome!

I was going to call them Ents but neither of them had read/seen Lord of the Rings. They just looked at me like I was speaking another language.

My bun was supposed to be a boy, then when we brought “him” into the vet to get neutered, she came out with a spay! I thought about changing her name, but Mosley just fit her and I loved it too much.

I got the name “mosley” out of ancestry.com when I was searching for my great great grandmother. Her maiden name was “Mobley”. Somehow, one day, I came up with Mosley from “Mobley” and it just stuck.

My first bunnies were named “Bambi” and “Feline” after the Disney movie “Bambi”
I was like 5 years or something like that, when I got them (my mum took care of them, but I named them)

The next bunnies we got were “Simba” and “Nala” after “The Lion King”, because I wanted names from a Disney film for them too and it fits because Simba was a lion-lop

Sadly Simba died during neutering and we got another bun, Monty. We got him from the shelter and he already had a name and we liked “Monty” as a rabbit name.

Later on we got Kovu and we wanted a name from “The Lion King” because he’s Nala’s son.

Jumper is named Jumper because he is an English Spot and we wanted an English name from him. As I’m doing rabbit hopping we named him Jumper.

As Nala died we bought another rabbit, Princess. Her breeder names her rabbits after her mother, the first letter has to be same. As is her mother is “Pepsy” we had to think about a name with “P”. As she should be bonded with Jumper we decided to an english name and because she is a white rabbit with blue eyes we tought “Princess” fits

The last rabbit we got is Kiara, she is named after “The Lion King” too… I don’t know, I always wanted a “Kiara” and it fits

Bella Rose (Bet nobody knew she had a second name, ha ha ha) was already named when we adopted her. We kept her name, but most often just called her Bella.

Lionel was named when we adopted him, too, but we thought it was a great name for a Lionhead, so we kept his too.

Roxi and Asha were named Sophia and Brandi when we adopted them. They had come from a really bad situation, so we thought we would give them new names for a new start.
We started calling Roxi “Rocket” because she was bouncing off the walls, so we kind of played off that with “Roxi,” which means “dawn,” which I though was appropriate for a bunny with a new start in life.
I have always liked the name “Ash” for a bunny, but of course my lions are all white so it doesn’t really fit. So we named her “Asha” which means “Hope.”

                                              Yay! This is cool.

I like human names for pets as well ad naming after fictional characters. I’m a bit of a Star Wars fan, so Obie ( bun Kenobi) was named partly for that. ( I have a friend who has a black lop named Vader lol)

We have 3 cats. Jack is named after Jack sparrow from pirates of the Caribbean. Dinah is named after a childhood friends cat, who was also a tortoise shell calico. Luca actually has 2 names. We took her in when our neighbor moved. Part of the family called her Mama and the others called her Luca. I loved the name Luca, so we kept it. She doesnt respond to either name lol. We usually call her Lu or Lulu. Though.

Lola buns, I love that you called your husband Lola.
Reminds me of The Kinks song.

Sorry, not much of an idea for nicknames. If they’re good at a sport, call them “meal ticket”?

I’m with most of you guys. I dislike the stereotypical pet names for animals, I like to give them “human” names that are based off of fictional, TV/Anime/Video Game/Book characters.

I usually like to wait to see what the little one’s personality is like before I name them. When we got Skipper, the bf had named her before we got her. We had wanted to get another pet after his ferret, Gilligan, had passed away. He decided that whoever we decided to get next (we were thinking of getting a hedgehog or a chinchilla) would be named Skipper like Gilligan’s seafaring captain from Gilligan’s Island. Ian and Hugo came with their names when we adopted them. They seemed to really fit their personalities so we kept them. We have of course given them nicknames. ;] Ian is SnuggleBug and Ianbobeian. Hugo is Whoogie/Whoogiebear. For Tohka I had drawn up this huge list of names (Tahmoh Jayne, Benedict, Hello, and on it went >.<). Nothing seemed to stick or match him. The bf and I were watching a new anime and one of the characters was named Tohka. I turned to the bf and was like that. That is his name. It matches him perfectly.

I originally was going to name him Dust Bunny but then I found out it wasn’t as unique of a name as I thought. When his fur started to grow and cover his face he looked more like a mini monster than a rabbit. So I got the idea to call him Yeti. Although I rarely ever use it, most of the time I call him Boo Bears lol.

Me and my then-boyfriend were discussing names. We both like Harry Potter, and we both thought that Luna Lovegood and Lily Potter were cool characters with pretty names, and I thought she looked more like a Lily. So, Lily.

I was watching “Lost” during the time I got my bunny. There is a character named Sawyer and I liked the name. When I looked up the meaning I found out it means “wood cutter”. Since bunnies chew on wood I thought it would make a cute name for my bunny. It fit perfectly.

I also call him Soybun or Bunbun. Haha

Hmmm. Maybe I will choose an anime name for our next bun if my husband will let me lol

Bruno, I watch a lot of different types. XD While most kids grew up watching Nickelodeon I grew up watching Anime. So my taste really has a huge span. One of my all time favorites is Ouran High School Host Club. xDDD It just cracks me up so much. I recently finished watch Macross Frontier. Since I’ve watched the Macross series since a kid I was really happy to see them reboot the series. It was really good! (Gotta love mechs.) I think it really just depends on your taste in Anime. What type do you like? I like shojo, shonen, and pretty much everything. XD If you ever want to talk Anime I’m always good to talk. =] And I was really surprised by the bf letting me name Tohka after an anime. When we first started dating he barely watched any. But I made sure to Asian wash him and made him sit through hours of anime. ;P If I didn’t do that I feared my family would not accept him. >.> >.<

BB, my husband hates anime. But I think my constant birage of it has softened him to it a bit. Ouran Host Club was hilarious. I think my favorite anime ever is Sailor Moon. It’s the first one I watched and I think I’ve read through the manga series a million times lol. I’m not a huge fan of mecha, but Neon Genesis Evangelion is quite good. I usually lean more towards the sci-fi and fantasy ones. Meh, I can’t remember all the Japanese category names, but things like Trigun, Black Butler, Hetalia, Fairy Tail, etc.

I usually prefer human names, not sure why. I had two cats named Henry and Spencer.
I tend to let my children name the pets though, if it’s a reasonable request. We had a dog (who lives with my parents now..) his name is Beagle… and he is a beagle of course. My oldest was 3 when he named him.

Lucky is named that because the place we adopted him seemed really set in us keeping his name they had given him, but I didn’t want that name (his name was Luke, and Lucas is a boy name that I adore so I didn’t want a pet with that name lol) We called him Lucky Luke and now just Lucky, or Luckster

Rodan… ugh. It didn’t roll off the tongue easily at first, but I love it now. It suits him in a way. He go huge, and Rodan is a pteranadon monster that Godzilla fights. Initially, my youngest, who had just turned 4, wanted to name him Godzilla… I refused. At the shelter he said “okay, RODAN!” lol, I didn’t think it would stick, but the spca loved it. His name was Brody at the shelter.

My oldest got to name the third bunny, he wanted Godzilla or King Ghidorah. omg. I said no way, come up with something else you like. He’s a huge Calvin and Hobbes nerd, so he named him Calvin. Calvin and Rodan bonded, so it would have been funny having two enemies of godzilla as a bonded pair lol  His name at the shelter was Beck

And Dozer… my boyfriend named him.I forget what name I wanted, but he said Dozer (bf is in construction) and it stuck. Quite suiting since he has completely demolished the carpet!

I went to my local adoption agency and again asked if there was any rabbits that had been there for a long time. There was, and they b rought out this little female. The problem, the guy said is that she’s…a little odd looking. She’s got bulbous eyes that are a little too close together and a long snout, and apparently people think she’s ‘too ugly’ to adopt. I immediately decided to adopt her.
Because I’m a big harry potter fan, and merlin is already a wizard name, I decided to name her Luna Lovegood, beccause of her dreamy expression and slightly bulgy eyes. Luna and Merlin. A very lovely couple! She’s very shy, but Merlin is already absolutely in love with her. Pictures soon hopefully!

Jersey was named after a confectionary we have here called Jersey Caramels.her colouring reminded me of them. I named her on the short car ride home. It just seemed to fit.

Rumball was named Hoppy in his former home but when he moved in here, I wanted another “sweets” name. So he was named after Rum Balls. It suited his colouring & shape.

Next to arrive was TimTim. That was a name I thought would be temporary until I came up with something better. But it stuck!
It was sort of Tiny Tim
inspired because he was so little at the time. There was also a disabled rabbit i first came across on BB named Timothy. He was the same colouring and I just really loved his nature. So that was also inspiration.

Then came Jelly. Back to food lol.
He was in care with a friend & her daughter named him Jellybean. They also had his mother & brother. the bro got named Jellybean2 (eventually shortened to JB2).
When I took Jellybean(1) in, I shortened his name to Jelly to avoid confusion.

Maple’s former owners had named her Tabitha. I renamed her Maple as I wanted a “sweeter” name.

Turned out Maple was pregnant. So then came Potamus. When she was born, I had intended to call her Syrup to go with her mums name. But she grew so rapidly and she reminded me of a baby hippo. So you can see…Hippopotamus >> HipHopPotamus >> Potamus.

Maple & Potamus have a male companion and he is Gooseman. He was a foster named Ainsley but he ended up staying for good! I was never super keen on Ainsley for him. I’m not entirely sure how “Gooseman” came about but it is such a better fit for him. He can be a bit of a goose sometimes. :p

Finally, we have Ailís. She is Rumball’s companion now since Jersey passed away. She was named Alice by her foster carer. Actually, she was “Big Mamma” for while, then Alice. Pretty sure Alice in Wonderland & the White Rabbit is how that name was chosen. I decided not to change her name, just the spelling. It’s a Celtic version of Alice.

I also have nicknames for them. I call Bunkey “Bunkus” and Nibbles “Nibby”.

I later found out that “Bunkey” is the name of a character from Enid Blyton’s “Noddy” which I watched as a kid. I think the name may have remained in my subconscious somehow!

Anya got her name because of the character Anya from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The character absolutely is terrified of rabbits, its the only thing she fears. If something happens, she blames bunnies. I couldn’t pass up the irony of it.
(Anya)          I’ve got a theory, it could be bunnies…

I wanted to mainly name her Belle, but when i told my friends, that name got shot down because one of them had a pet bird years ago that died and was named Belle. So Faith it is.

My bunny Midas is golden, so I named him after King Midas (the whole Midas Touch.. Haha..) I was thinking of names having to do with his beautiful coat, and that name just popped up in my head :p

Spelda & Twig were named after characters from a book I was reading. My current rabbit was going to be named Master after a character from the Doctor Who tv shows but I was going through the names I had picked out for my future rats and I thought that Sir Tainted fit him better.

So for the first two weeks I couldn’t come up with a name. One day is saw her stand up, size up her cage area, ready herself, and then execute an EPIC bunny flop and nap. After I saw that I decided to name her Flopsie.

Truthfully I never call her that. I usually call her by her nickname, Meatball because she has a small head and when she sits, her body forms into a giant ball of meat.

When she was a baby her baby fur was really light and so my friend calls her Nugget, short for chicken nugget lol

So my bun got his name thanks to Disney movie. I saw Frozen, and that cute snowman showed up talking about warm hugs, all clueless and awkward, just like my bunny, so he became Olaf. Olaf with a lot of nicknames.

Bunnito got his name cause when I got him he was skittish when being held, but didn’t mind it when I held him with a towel. He ended up looking like a lil bunny burrito lol. So I ended up calling him Bunnito and it stuck lol. Meatloaf was a lil simpler. I remembered reading that when bunnies tuck their limbs up under them it is called the bunny meatloaf. And Meatsie would always “loaf” around. So I ended up calling her my lil Meatloaf… Plus the fact she is bigger n fluffier makes her look more loaf like. XD
