I usually buy lettuce & other greens for my bunnies every week, wash, dry, and pack it in papertowels and baggies for the week. It’s been a busy week and this weekend I’ve been too tired to do my usual things so I just bought a bunch of pre-washed pre-packaged salad stuff.

Do any of you ever use these? If so, do you rinse it or just give it straight from the container?

        Thanks!

I sometimes buy the plastic container of spring mixes and such. And if the kale fresh stuff they have looks awful (really, why is the kale you are selling yellowing already yuck) then I buy the bagged stuff instead. I do rinse it, because… my rabbits like wet greens and it gives them a little more water and rinses off whatever might be on them.

I have used organic packaged greens. I will still rinse them.

Sounds good. The green leaf, red leaf, and romaine don’t say organic, but are whole leaves — Garden Life brand. Then I also got organic spring mix. I’ll rinse as I’m preparing their salads.

I soak and rinse everything even from my own garden… You just never know.. I think the packs have fine print that states to wash and inspect before serving.

Occasionally I do, and I wash anyways, even if it says pre washed. You just never know. Sometimes the mixed bags are convenient though when you want a variety but don’t want a ton of greens.

I give Organic packaged Spring Mix and Baby Romaine. I always have it in the fridge for myself as a quick salad so the bunnies often get some too. I only buy the Organic type because I’ve heard of a lot of recalls for non-Organic packaged lettuce mixes, usually due to salmonella or listeria.

I’ve looked everywhere and can’t find packaged organic green leaf or red leaf and those have to be the main part of Moshi’s salad.

I never noticed that the recalls have only been on non-organic packaged produce. Will rinsing well get anything that is there off?

I know what you mean about soaking and rinsing ever what you’ve grown yourself Roberta. Look what happened with my basil! That totally freaked me out. I ended up destroying the basil, both types of mint and the thyme I was growing for the bunnies, and then spending $683 at the vet to make sure they were ok. The deer pretty much ate the rest of our garden this year.

Whether you buy the greens in a package already cut up, in a bunch or head, or grow it yourself the concerns over contamination are similar. Contamination isn’t unique to packaged salad greens, it’s just that people are less likely to wash them carefully before eating, Also, if there is a problem with packaged greeens it’s easier to trace it and issue a recall than it would be for loose greens. Of course recalls don’t happen when you eat contaminated greens from your own garden.

With organic greens, you do still have to worry about contamination, just not from the same things. Conventional veggies is likely to have pesticide residue on them, but organic veggies are more likely to have bacterial contamination. Either way, washing is the best way to remove it. I try to buy organic not only to avoid chemicals, but also b/c I feel it is better for the environment.

NO! It’s to expensive – I wouldn’t even buy it for me! Ha ha ha ha……

Being serious…. my thoughts are, if you have to wash it etc., you may as well make it tooooo.
But I know, easy for me to say now – I’m sure (know) I would have indulged in prepacked veggies back when I was working (and was tired ALL the time).

Actually, that reminds me… back when I worked in the City, I used to cut through a food court to catch the train home and one place sold there leftover’s (actual meals) for half price – it was nothing for me to grab 4 and declare to the kid’s (they were really young and naive) look what mummy made for dinner (while I heated it up as they were putting their stuff away). Ha ha ha …..
And your worried about feeding bunnies prepacked veggies??? LOL!

That’s honestly the only way to get veggies for my buns. We don’t have a reliable farmers market that I can get good veggies from. So I’m stuck buying packaged veggies from the groceries. I would grow them their food (I’m actually in the process of trying to now) but all my attempts up till now have failed because I over watered them and attracted gnats. (Not much of a green thumb.) I just make sure to wash them really well.

Well this is awkward, it’s ALL I feed lol! The only lettuce that doesn’t come in a bag is iceberg, so I don’t have much of a choice. Dork that I am, I had never considered the farmer’s market, will have to try there this Saturday.
