Hi everyone! So, my rabbits are currently living in an x-pen, and I’m thinking about changing that. I still live at my parent’s house and they’ve been kind enough to even allow me to have all the pets that I do, but they have made me make the rabbit’s x-pen smaller. I want to make them a cage that they have more space to run around in. Maybe an NIC condo?

Here is a photo of how they are living now, and the space that they have.

So, what do you think I should buy/build for them. I’ll tell you, it would have to be something really basic and easy to make. I don’t have any tools, and I am horrible at constructing things.

What type of cage do you house your rabbits in? Please post pictures and tell me how you made them!!!!!!!!!!!

First, go to the Home page and click on Habitats for some great pix of other people’s homes for their bunnies. Next, check out this forum for any (read only) posts that sound like yours, so you can see other pix for more suggestions and ideas.

Finally, remember that if your bunnies like to climb at all, go up! You can get a Maze haven or a Cottontail Cottage with 2 or 3 stories for them to climb in, hide in, and generally use for different floors. Easy to assemble. Or, you can make a simple platform out of unfinished wood and some dowels or 2x4s that is about a foot high off the ground or less, so it’s like a bunk bed. Bunnies can jump up to stretch out, or lie underneath for a cozy feeling. Even something like a flat shelf like they use for shoes in closets, with a covering on it like a soft bunny bed or a piece of fleece, would be a platform they could lie on and under.

A NIC condo doesn’t require tools (just something to cut the zip ties with!).
My two have a condo 6 grids long, 3 wide and 3 tall. It doesn’t have full levels yet but it has 4 shelves at varying heights that they love to jump on (and they sleep on the top shelf). All we used to build it was 3 packs of grids, linoleum for the floor and some wooden beams to support the shelves (we got these at a DIY store where they cut them to the length you need for you, super cheap and easy). Everything is just zip tied together securely.
We didn’t bother with creating a wooden base or anything like some people do, sure it would look neater but really it’s just the same as an xpen but taller and with shelves. It’s heavy and sturdy enough that even with the bunnies rocketing around it like pinballs it doesn’t move or shake at all.

Mine have a 5×2 NIC condo with a 2×2 loft, but the condo is mostly just a place for litter boxes, food, water, etc, as they are free to run about the whole house during the day. At night/when I am gone for a while, they are confined to their condo+one room.
I don’t know if I would go any smaller than an X-pen if they are not going to be allowed free roam for most of the day. How much are they out per day, and how big of an NIC condo would you be able to make?

Hi everyone! I just built a sort of second floor to their x-pen. They free range most of the day around my house, but if I’m gone, they usually stay in their pen or free range in my bedroom.

Midas is living in a 4×4 X-pen. I am going to have my dad build a second floor for him though
