My bun Orion broke his foot last week and has been recovering in a cast. I’ve taken everything in his cage that he could jump up on out and right now he’s just living on the floor of his cage with a water dish that hooks to the cage wire so he doesn’t get his little cast wet. He’s stopped using his litterbox, instead leaving his piles right in the middle of his floor, and he even peed outside the litterbox! I’m not sure if this is because he’s upset about something or what…he’s eating and drinking just fine, and he still gets playtime, he’ll binky around my room. Anyway, can anyone give any insight into his little bunny brain? What’s the deal?

Maybe he’s just too tired to use the litter box? I imagine lifting the cast to hop in the litter box may be a little taxing and not as fun as it used to be. It may be more comfortable to just make the entire cage a little box for a while or to cut a hole in the side of the litter box that way he can just shuffle into it. I don’t think he’s in pain because you said he’s binkying but maybe he’s just feeling lazy or upset about the cast?

It could be that, but he has no problem jumping out of his cage, which is at least twice as high as his litterbox, and he’ll sit in it sometimes. I think you may be right though, I think maybe he’s trying to tell me “get this stupid thing off my foot!”
