We were given baytril for her again on the 21st. The label said 0.5ml twice daily for two weeks. I was pretty sure the other times it was 1ml twice daily, but I followed instructions, I am not the doctor after all. But, after a week of giving them to her, she’s not responding as well as she usually does (she stopped sneezing for a day or two, but then she started again and she has discharge from her nose again and for the first time ever I pulled a long, stringy white thing from her eye so she’s getting discharge there too) and the bottle still has A TON of baytril left in it (I have never had extra before) – I did a test measuring of it and it’s way more than another week at that dose.

So, now I am waiting for the vet to call back (he is at lunch or something). I think their office gave me the wrong dosage on the label and it was meant to be 1ml. If so, my poor baby has been stressed out getting medicine all week and it’s not even enough to help her.

The vet fills the bottle and then tells the tech what to put on the label. So, if it is the wrong dose, the tech got it wrong and not the vet. But, gr.

Can you compare the strength (mg/ml) of this lot with an old bottle you had?

Sometimes labels indicate (x)mls per x pounds body weight or even (x)mg per (x)pounds body weight. Eg. Like on the boxes for metacam. Its not so common with on dispensed meds from the vet though.

It would be a pain if she’s only getting half what is needed but some is better then none!

I don’t have the old bottle, but the receptionist at the vet said the dose was different so she is supposed to have the vet call me back when he gets in. Though, she said around 2 and it’s 2:30 already. Might have to call back if they don’t get back to me by 3. And the fact the bottle will have about half left if I do this dose really has me thinking the tech wrote it down wrong. I noticed how much extra I was going to have on Sunday, because it was a week in and the bottle was still well over half full. :s

I’ve received labels that have read 0.0mls before.
Hope you can get it sorted soon.

Ok vet had a tech call back and it is the right dose – but he did change it up on us and since she’s not responding as well, he’s going to give us a new bottle with her old prescription (for free) and see if that works.

I don’t like the white stringy discharge she’s having. That’s a new symptom and only started a few days ago.

If you put gentle pressure with your finger under her eye, does any more coming into the eye?
                  Pressing this area:

I haven’t tried, but I will check when she gets her dose tonight (don’t want to stress her out grabbing her right now). If it does, what does that mean?

She just might have a buildup in the duct there. It can get inflammed or blocked so then there’s not proper drainage.
Have you come across term Dacrocystits is some if the stuff you’ve been reading up on?
Buns with chronic infection (like pasteurellosis)
may get that or when the tooth roots are affecting the duct or bones in face are changing.

You can sort of help clear stuff that way and a warm cloth over the eye might help some also.

Ah, ok. She’s not had any discharge from the eyes before, so the care of it is new to me. Thanks. I have been cleaning her nose with q-tips when I give her the medicine, since she’s got a very runny nose this time and it’s getting dirt and hay stuck to her fur. She’s getting sick of me poking at her and is running from me every time I come anywhere near her now. But, she needs to have things cleaned up.

Do they have something like a baby aspirator for rabbits you can use to clear out their stuffy noses, since they can’t blow their nose like we can? Her nose is so runny and with the discharge being constant, she has to be having trouble breathing properly. And when she sneezes, she starts semi-choking like she’s trying to cough up mucus or something and paws at her mouth like a dog with a bone stuck in its throat. Cleaning some of that out would probably make her more comfortable.

Well, the new medicine bottle is here and it’s the same strength and everything – just says 1mL instead of 0.5mL as how much to give. I have no idea why the vet tried to lower the dose, but it didn’t work so lets not do that again! It’s nice they didn’t charge for the second bottle though, instead of having to pay for the treatment attempt that didn’t work.

I think it’s right you got this new lot free of charge. Definitely.

Yes. I’ve seen baby ear syringes suggested before in one of Dana Krempels articles. I think that’s the bulb kind?

I’ve often wondered if a plastic pipette would work. Or trying just one of the oral med syringes.
It could certainly help her to try to clear some of that gunk out.
{{{Stickers}}} Hope she’ll brighten up on this new round of abx.

She’s had 3 doses at the right strength and this morning I went to clean her nose with the q-tips like I have been all week and … it’s dry! I checked her eyes and they are clear too.

                              Thanks for the info Jersey.
