Our youngest bun “Finnly” is driving us completely nuts.  In less than a days time she will kick out most of her bedding.  We have tries different types of bedding (i.e. shavings, 3 different types of bedding pellets) and she empties her cage.  She’s so spastic. Her bursts of energy and speed are explosive and often.  100 MPH in a tiny circle.  Our other (OLDER) bun never did this and we are at a loss.  I’ve found pellets in places I would never imagine they would be, tennis shoes, under everything, on the desk, etc…  Is there any way we can fix this problem? Please help.

LOL – try a litter screen – some rabbits are just diggers.

My bun Holly just started doing this also even though she never did it before. I think she just “discovered” how fun it is. I try not too look at it as a problem, but just something that a lot of buns do naturally. I’m thinking of a litter screen also, but for now I’m just sweeping up the kicked out litter as it happens.

I’m such a sucker though, even her “bad behaviors” I find adorable. lol

Katie779 — I thought it was cute too, until I was laying in the hallway with the buns when Moshi got on one of his litterbox buried treasure hunts and I ended of with litter and poop kicked right in my face! I keep my distance from the litterbox when laying in the hall with them now!

Do you have bedding on the floor of the entire cage? Putting bedding only inside of the litter box should help this a lot. I also got plastic boxes with 6 inch high sides on them, that helped tremendously.

Should we just put a towel or something in the rest of her cage or leave it bare?  We don’t have any problem with our older bun.

Some people put towels, fleece or blankets down. I guess it would depend on your rabbit. Some rabbits chew them, some pee on them.. some like them. My 3 buns prefer the hard surfaces, but I do provide other things for them to lay on around their areas (ie grass mats, indoor/outdoor carpeting, towel). It allows them to choose what is comfy for them at that moment. Most often than not, everything is pushed out of the way while they lounge away on the hard flooring.

It also helps reinforce good litterbox habits by only having the bedding in the litterbox, less confusing to them. Yea… after the first couple times of Bumpy doing laps in his cage and having the shavings flying everywhere, I just gave up on that idea altogether.
