Hey guys, so my bun has been looking extra fluffy lately, and his beard and Einstein hair were extra poofy and cute.

Yesterday I started brushing him, and he oddly just sat there and let me do it (usually he doesn’t like it) and huge chunks of fur started coming off. I just kept going and it felt never ending!

I started combing his face and noticed I could gently tug his fur between my nails and effectively get fur out. It was almost scary how much fur was just coming off his face and neck but I don’t think I was tugging that hard and he looooooved it.

So throughout the day every time I would pet him is tug out some more loose fur and by the end of the day..

HE LOST HIS BEARD AND MANE.

His face is now half the size!!! And he feels TINY with all that fur off!!

Is this normal?! Was this molting? There’s still more fur but I was afraid to keep brushing after I realized I brushed his face off. To lose that much fur in a day?! There are no bald patches but the fur on his back ears and neck is a bit thin.

Also, will his beard and mane grow back?! I hope so

Oh, and he’s a black bunny and the fur coming off was mostly grey.

        Thanks!

It definitely sounds like he is blowing his coat… Is he healthy in all other regards ?

He’s about a year old and I adopted him a couple of months ago. He did have an ear mite issue at the shelter and we gavehim a second round of revolution about three weeks ago…his ears are still a little bit dry and flaky but improved.

Other than that he seems like a healthy young bun…poops and eats and sleeps all day.

Is it normal for a bunny to lose so much fur he changes his appearance, and will it grow back?!

I have seen rabbits almost change shape when they blow their coat. The hair coming off is grey, because its dead hair. It will grow back, your bun is just getting into his lighter summer coat

I wouldn’t overly worry about it. As the others have said it just sounds like he’s going through a typical molt. It’s always surprising how much hair they lose! His lovely mane and beard will be back in no time.

Lola isn’t a lionhead but I noticed she was shedding quite a bit more than normal the other day too. She would get up from a flop/nap and the blanket would look like it had grown a coat of it’s own. So I started brushing her a little bit at a time and now she looks ridiculous! Her fur is all uneven and darker in some spots. The first stroke of the brush and I thought I had brushed her bald but she had tiny fur underneath.

During heavy molting season, my lions do become much less fluffy. Don’t worry, it will grow back!

All of mine are molting at the moment, Starsky (brown and white spot in my sig) blows his whole coat like a bullrush going to seed so daily plucking is required… His colours always change and vary during the process. It looks like Pascal (Big silver fox/black on the far right of y sig) is starting to molt the same way.

How long does molting usually last? It’s day three and bunzos looks really bad..like a mutant bunny. He has a triangle of rly short fuzz on his forehead and really short hair around his eyes. Tufts of white/grey fur still coming out. He looks really scary!

Depends on a lot of things really… Season, weather, breed of rabbit… They do look disreputable when they go through it… I think Starsky has been in perpetual molt sinze a month after I got him.

My Spike lost her mane too, and her fluffy little tutu over her little bunny butt. She has a bald spot now on her neck! It was kind of worrisome at first, but I think she’s either just in that awkward six-month baby phase or she’s blowing her coat. She has little black patches in her otherwise silver fur. It’s just interesting to watch her change!
